Review: On his previous excursion for Far Out Recordings, legendary Brazilian artist Marcos Valle offered up a string of samba-soaked Latin jazz and jazz-funk gems. Here he flips the script by offering up a set of songs that recall the boogie-fired brilliance of his disco-era output. There's much to admire throughout, from the warmth of cheery opener "Olha Quem Ta Chegando" and the Azymuth style samba jazz-funk shuffle of "Odisseia", to the glassy-eyed sweetness of "Alma" and the slow and seductive grooves of "Distancia". Best of all, though, is "Vou Amanha Saber", a rousing disco-funk outing rich in weighty grooves and surging horns.

Review: By the time he recorded "Brazilian Dorian Dream" in 1976, Brazilian composer, musician, producer and bandleader Manfedo Fest had already worked on countless bossa-nova, samba and jazz albums, both in the United States and his native Brazil. Yet the album, which Far Out has now reissued, is like nothing else he recorded before or after - and not just because it was based on "the principle of the modal diatonic scales of the Dorian mode". Musically, it's deliciously vibrant and colourful, combining elements of his native Brazilian samba and bossa-nova with Azymuth style jazz-funk, American jazz-fusion, and futuristic, then cutting edge synthesizer sounds. Above all, though, the album strikes a near perfect balance between funkiness and the sweet sunniness that defines some of the greatest Brazilian music.

Review: Far Out takes a second deep dive into the previously unheard early demos of Brazilian jazz-funk greats Azymuth, offering up more unpolished gems recorded during the years as one of Brazil's most sought-after session bands. Interestingly, much of the material is closer in tone and style to their subsequent releases, though some of the rhythms, solos and basslines are arguably a little wilder and more experimental. Highlights include the fizzing opener "Duro De Roer", the sweaty and percussive brilliance of "Bateria Do Mamao", the Blaxploitation influenced spy-chase madness of "Quem Tem Medo" and the surprisingly smooth "Manha", the demo that eventually earned Azymuth a recording contract.

Review: Far Out has decided to pay tribute to one of Brazilian music's most overlooked - and, let's face it, obscure - talents, Ana Mazzotti. She recorded just two albums in the 1970s before passing away from cancer in her early 30s a few years later. Both of those album have become sought-after, particularly 1974 debut "Ninguem Vai Me Segurar". This first ever reissue proves why. Warm, breezy and effortlessly soulful, it sees Mazzotti and her backing band sashay between languid samba-jazz, intergalactic bossa, soft-focus Brazilian soul and the kind of attractive jazz-funk/fusion that would later become the hallmark of Azymuth (not much of a surprise since two of that band's founder members were part of Mazzotti's backing band).

Review: Far Out Recordings have long been masters at unearthing and reissuing long-lost Brazilian masterpieces. Jose Mauro's 1970 debut album, Obnoxious, undoubtedly falls into that category. It's long been a favourite with committed diggers such as Gilles Peterson, Madlib and Floating Points, all of whom appreciate Mauro's distinctively melancholic take on the samba sound. Drenched in atmospheric strings and with the singer's bittersweet vocals to the fore, the album sounds like it was informed as much by the Walker Brothers ad Rotary Connection as the sun-kissed sounds Mauro would have grown up listening to. It's not exactly psychedelic per se, but it's certainly impressively atmospheric and occasionally refreshingly dark. File under: "essential listening".

Clareia (2000 Black remix) (5:58)
Clareia (IG Culture remix) (6:30)
Review: Surely one of the most fitting albums of the summer, Sabrina Malheiros's fifth LP Clareia undergoes some stately remix treatment as we move from open fields to sweaty clubs to party for the rest of the year. Three of broken beat's finest and most respected protagonists all play a role... Man of the moment Henry Wu gets woozy on the organs and widens the whole jam out into seven minutes of space funk, Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black dig deep into the bossa dynamic with a Latin jazzy spiritual feel running throughout the momentum while CoOp founder IG Culture adds a little skip to the drums, dreamy plucks and bassline that won't stop bouncing. If it's bruk, don't try and fix it.

Review: The worldly wide Far Our label turns its attention to some fascinating house sounds from Ivan Mamao Conti. "Katmandu" is all bendy bass and tropical drums, steamy humidity and sensuous synths. Pablo Valentino flips it into warm and jazzy number for cosy basement clubs that harks back to the 90s, and Jazzanova then layer in plenty of the golden instrumentals and key playing that makes the music come alive. The closing remix is all Moodymann vibes with its rough kicks and claps, funk bass and lived-in aesthetic. This is classy house music from front to back.

Stay (6:17)
Hot Footing It (6:00)
Review: Before tearing up dancefloors - and the pop charts - with 1981 single 'Southern Freeez', Brit-funk outfit Freeez self-released a couple of singles on main man John Rocca's Pink Rhythm label. These are now sought-after items, particularly debut double A-side 'Stay'/'Hot Footing It', hence this handy reissue. 'Stay', an early composition from UK jazz-funk legend Jean-Paul Maunick, is a deliciously expansive affair, with Spanish guitar solos, dazzling electric piano motifs, rubbery bass, shuffling drums and sweet female lead vocals all vying for attention in the mix. 'Hot Footing It' is a more straight-up UK jazz-funk floor-filler full of fluid jazz-bass, bustling drums and warming Rhodes riffs. Both tracks have naturally stood the test of time very well.

Review: Daniel Maunick continues on the theme of his debut album Macumba Quebrada from 2019 with this new EP on Far Out. That LP got high praise from dons like Moodymann, Gilles Peterson and Ron Trent and this new one will too, surely. It is deep, mystic house of the highest order, with dreamy pads layered over loose, spacious drums and with wooden percussion rolling over the top. It's hard to pick a highlight here as all four jams really connect to mind, body and spirit thanks to their authenticity and live feels. The vocal motifs add further layers of depth to unpack and explore.

Review: Ricardo Bomba was not only a studio owner, engineer, pianist and composer, but so too was he an accomplished amateur skateboarder. He lay down these previously unreleased, sun soaked Brazilian tunes in 1978 after years as bandleader with the one and only Jorge Ben's live show. The master tapes were said to have been binned during a heavy studio clear out but the man himself kept a tape copy that has been remastered for this special 7". Mariana Couto provides the angelic vocals while the music all trills with joy and happiness.

Now they're back on Far Out with a new album of sunkissed magic that will take you right back to that feel-good place they explored on their first collaboration, taking in delicate balladry and playful whimsy steeped in soul and sentiment. It's a joyous listen from two totems of Brazilian music, produced, arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman.

He left with Sun Ra in 1973 and worked with him until 1980. While in Detroit in 1987, he released his first album as a leader, the Pan-Afro project "Mora!". Mexican-American percussionist and former member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Francisco Mora Catlett recorded the first of these albums as private presses in 1987. The follow up was with an expanded Detroit jazz brass section but was shelved for many years. Both are pan-American melting pots that stir up afro-cuban rhythms, fiery sambas, frenetic batucadas and much more which is why they have become such gold standard Latin jazz classics.

Review: Brothers Lelo and Ze Eduardo Nazario formed Grupo Um in 1976, creating a visceral, experimental fusion project which remains a critical peak for leftfield music from Brazil. Now Far Out Recordings present the first album the group recorded, half-hidden from history due to the avant-garde nature of the music struggling to find a market in the 70s. It's absolutely daring, from the skittering musicality to the wild time signatures, but with the benefit of hindsight it's also incredibly engaging. Rescuing the master tapes from Lelo Nazario's archives, we're now able to savour this incredible work 50 years after the fact.

Review: We owe a lot to Toni Mazzotti, the son of Ana Mazzotti, for this one as it is apparently he who unearthed his mother's 'O Filho Do Homem' single. It is thought to have been recorded by the late Brazilian composer and keyboardist in Brazil in 1983 and is the only thing she recorded in the eighties. It is one of many unreleased tunes the great musician played on TV Cultura and Programa MPB during the 80s. Each show proved her skills as she moved into the more hard edge and experimental sounds while always staying true to her roots in jazz, samba and funk.

Review: In February 1981, one of Brazil's most cosmic-minded jazz and jazz-funk musicians, flautist Hermeto Pascoal, gathered a group of leading Brazilian players to perform a concert at the Planetario de Gavea in Rio de Janeiro. That concert has become part of Brazilian jazz folklore, with those present citing it as one of Pascoal's most sublime performances. This album from Far Out Recordings presents the highlights of that set in freshly remastered form. What stands out is not only the freewheeling nature of the music and its' undeniably spiritual and cosmic feel, but also the near impossible-to-pigeonhole nature of Pascoal's compositions, which sit somewhere between space jazz, jazz-funk, free-jazz and heady tropical jazz fusion. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Nicola Conte returns to his regular haunt of Far Out for another excursion into sweetest spiritual jazz and jazz funk, steeped in the sound of 70s studio gold and full of feeling. As a veteran of Blue Note, Impulse! and Schema, the Italian artist has a serious legacy behind him, and his series of Brazilian compilations in the Viagem series cemented his deep knowledge for the full global spectrum of jazz. Such spirit comes through in abundance on Umoja as Conte folds elements of Afrobeat and North American jazz into his spiralling, joyous and soul-charged sound, with the likes of Zara McFarlane and Myles Sanko lending their added talents to this outstanding record.

Review: Record Store Day sometimes gets a lot of criticism for the sheer volume of re-releases people didn't seem to ask for. In the case of Visions of Dawn, nothing could be further from the truth. A forgotten, or at least long-lost Brazilian acid folk masterpiece, the record was first recorded in Paris circa 1976, but then quickly seemed to vanish into the ether many of the tracks sound like they emerged from.
In 2009, it was 'rediscovered' and immediately became a cult classic - again. Melding samba, Bossa Nova, trippy moods and gorgeous instrumentation, it has the ability to make you feel transported and transformed, as though offering an earshot of what another world might sound like. Or at least the other side of our own. Listen and not be transfixed, we challenge you.

The composer, multi-instrumentalist and arranger with a wizard-like appearance was described once by the great Miles Davis as 'the most impressive musician in the world'. The Brazilian fusion great was known for his fiery live sets and is just as thrilling on record as this one proves. All the tracks are originals with a loud flurry of piano and 60s big band horn chants, cool electric keys and mind-blowing fusion sounds all making for exciting music that is thrilling to listen to and utterly unconventional.

Review: From the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, Brazil's population suffered at the hands of the brutal dictatorship of the Fifth Republic, arising from a coup at the hands of the country's armed forces with support from the US administration of the time. Human rights abuses, institutionalised torture and extrajudicial killings were par for the course of a regime, supported by religious and anti-Communist sections of society. At the same time, the domestic avant garde music scene was merging with the mainstream birth the Tropicalia arts movement, but this wasn't the only sound that was pushing back against the corridors of power. Forged from rock, folk, psychedelia and traditional Brazilian rhythms, while Som Imaginario aren't always considered part of that scene, they shared values and, in many ways, an approach to pushing sonic boundaries. This 1976 live album speaks volumes about the creative freedoms expressed as a form of protest against militarised conformity.
