Dave Lee's Essentials Sampler
Cat: ZEDD 12372. Rel: 04 Dec 23
Jamiroquai - "Little L" (Dave Lee Re-Blend) (8:14)
Shelia & B Devotion - "Spacer" (Dave Lee Disco Fantasy mix) (9:00)
Review: Long time house and disco devotee Dave Lee comes through on Z Records once more with a sampler from this years ZR Essentials collection. It features two of his masterful reworks starting with Jamiroquai's 'Little L'. He flips into a funked up cosmic delight with plenty of the original's synth flourishes melodic hooks and orchestration all present and correct but with added slap bass, replayed rhodes and beefy new drums which make this a surefire dancefloor winner pretty much anywhere. On the flip comes Dave Lee's Disco Fantasy mix of Shelia & B Devotion's 1979 hit 'Spacer' which has a more retro disco sound thanks to the masterful original work of Chic. Additional clav, new string parts and solo-ing keys give 'Spacer' the extended DJ mix it never had at the time of original release.

Welcome To The Dub
Cat: GAMM 180. Rel: 04 Dec 23
Welcome To The Dub (9:41)
Dubanova (7:05)
Happiness & Peace (5:42)
Review: It's always a good day when Al Kent is back with new music. This one on Gamm, Welcome To The Dub, finds him dubbing out some lush disco sounds. The title cut is a loopy and jazz-funk-infused number with lovely hi-hats and noodling chords all radiating joy and uplifting energy. 'Dubanova' then takes a more low-slung route with a sleazy guitar riff and nice live drums embellished with smartly overdubbed vocals coated in echo. 'Happiness & Peace' is a quieter affair with echoing hits and a meandering lead that encourages your mind to do the same.

Cuff It (explicit mix) (4:46)
Work It Out (4:16)
Review: Beyonce's seventh studio album, Renaissance, was one of her biggest to date back in 2022. It turned out plenty of big hits which got heard on dance floors all over the world and now one of them makes it to this cheeky 7". 'Cuff' was written and produced by Beyonce with additional help from Raphael Saadiq and The-Dream, amongst others, including Chic's Nile Rodgers. And you can hear that in the low-slung disco grovels and funky basslines that are the bedrock for Bey to do her vocal thing. 'Work It Out' comes on the flip for a more slow and percolating funk workout.

Empty World (4:09)
Give It To Me How (4:18)
Review: Smoove returns with his label Wack Records and delivers two killer cuts straight from the heart of Motown. Utilizing original multitrakcs from the home of Rick James and The Supremes, Smoove gets his swirv on and delivers two uptempo hip-hop bangers, curveball-tinged with the instrumental backings of Motown. On the A, 'Empty World', we hear an attention-grabbing Nas mashup ('Life's A Bitch'), while the aforementioned artists are equally as well fused on the much more positive B-side.

The Wind (12")
Cat: TYPE 01. Rel: 30 Nov 23
The Wind (Rahaan remix)
Baby Baby Please (Rahaan remix)
Review: Newcastle-based Hot Biscuit Recordings unleashes a new offshoot, Typewriter Record Pool, with main label regular Rahaan at the controls. A-side 'Wind' sees the Chicagoan digger, DJ and scalpel fiend take on Christopher Cross's 1980 classic 'Ride Like The Wind', the soft rock legend's dalliance with synth-sporting AOR disco, extending it in all the right places while giving the track a slightly more floor-focused spin. Over on the reverse, 'Baby Baby Please' sees Rahaan stick a Windy City disco rocket under Thelma Houston's frequently overlooked, Clavinet-heavy cover of Philadelphia International favourite 'Don't Leave Me This Way'. Wisely, Rahaan constructs the track as a colossal builder, making great use of the more improvised and expressive parts of Houston's breathlessly brilliant vocal.

An Instrumental Need (6:45)
Take Me Up (Gotta Get Up) (Lego mix) (6:28)
Review: New York house royalty Ralphi Rosario has got scores of classics in his back catalogue, and now Groovin have cherry-picked a couple that are more than worthy of a scrub up and repress. The record leads with 'An Instrumental Need', an absolute benchmark of piano house perfection which will instantly take a party to a truly positive place, and that's even before the vibes solo comes twinkling into earshot. On the B-side is 1997 stomper 'Take Me Up', which plays to Rosario's strength in whipping up a frenzy with some seriously stripped back disco heat and an anthemic vocal from Donna Blakely.

I Can't Wait (bonus beats) (5:14)
Review: We've announced our undying love for Athens Of The North many times before and its releases like this which make us want to do so again. It comes from East Coast Love Affair and is a late-night jam of epic proportions that chugs on a deep disco tip. The sultry vocals are from Shetland-born and Edinburgh-based r&b singer and songwriter Philomenah who graduates from backing singer with this group to front and centre star. A lovely house dub brings some club weight on the flip while bonus beats seal the deal.

I Know You I Love You (reprise music & vocal only no beats mix) (6:07)
I Know You I Love You (bonus beats version) (3:18)
Review: This, ladies and Gentlemen, is big news. After a break of 12 years, pioneering West London broken beat collective Bugz In The Attic have reunited to deliver a brand new, ultra-limited 12" containing fresh revisions of 1981 Chaka Khan classic "I Know You, I Live You". The A-side "Chakattic Mix" is particularly wonderful, layering Khan's ultra-positive, life-affirming vocal above the crew's trademark bruk-up beats, jazzy bass and sensational jazz-funk synths (provided, no doubt, by original crew-member Kaidi Tathtam). Over on side B, they up the spine-tingling "end of night" factor via a version containing just music and vocals, before once more proving their immense drum programming skills via a delay-laden "Bonus Beats" DJ tool. In a word: brilliant.

DJ Flow - "Rhymes Over Egypt" (album version) (3:43)
King Most - "Ridin' Higher" (3:57)
Review: DJ Flow & King Most are two of California's finest hip-hop heads right now and have already had props from the one and only Jazzy Jeff. What they do here is add pure magic to an iconic soul song about Egypt which they are cleverly calling 'Rhymes Over Egypt.' It's a smooth groove with the the iconic chords rolling deep while new bars bring the funk up top and dusty drum breaks keep you moving. On the flip, King Most comes through with 'Ridin' Higher' which takes another soulful favorite and reworks it into something a little more bumping and energetic.

Love & Hate In A Different Time (Greg Wilson & Che extended mix) (7:08)
Love & Hate In A Different Time (acappella) (5:36)
Review: 'Love & Hate In a Different Time', one of the Gabriels' sonically sweetest but most lyrically hard-hitting singles to date, may seem an unusual choice to remix, even if the 2020 release did feature a stomping groove reminiscent of Northern Soul. Greg Wilson and Che have done a great job in re-imagining it for dancefloors on their 'full length remix', though, wrapping the original's simmering swings and Jacob Lusk's incredible vocals - smothered in reverb and delay - around a rolling, 1970s style disco groove. The pair also a delivers an 'extended original mix', which stretches out Gabriels' 2020 single version for greater dancefloor pleasure, and a spine-tingling, effects-laden 'acapella' take. Simply essential.

Under Your Spell (6:09)
Jog On (5:45)
Review: There is nothing semi-skimmed about the edits that the Semi Skimmed label serves up - they are always nothing less than full-fat sounds for big moments on the dancefloor. This latest limited edition 12" is the sixth in the series and it kicks off with 'Under Your Spell,' a gorgeously old-school disco sound with funky bass and lush, serene stings warming the whole thing through as the vocals soar. On the flip is a more funk stepper with big sax leads. 'Jog On' has slower grooves but is no less lavish and heart-melting.

Review: Just What The World Needs returns to their own self-titled label with a 14th outing of fiery disco heat. This is potent music that melds together jazz, funk and soul with a lashing of synth goodness. The opener is a real driver with emotive gospel vocals and mad jazz keys. Second is a slower jam with a more dreamy feel then the flip side comes on strong with jazz say leading the way beneath vaping chords and funky, smooth drums. Last of all is a supercharged leftfield bomb with explosive cosmic synths and the sort of energy that stands out in any set.

Half Way There
It Ain't Love
Review: System Olympia's take on boogie, Italo and house is second to none, as she's ably proven on her Delta Of Venus album and more recent New Erotica Collection. Bringing a sex-positive sass to her own productions, her sound remains equally sensual as she takes on some edits for the Hot Biscuit crew. 'Half Way There' is a monster slice of electro funk with a Moog bassline you could sink your teeth into and that same dreamlike, nocturnal ambience found in System Olympia's own tunes. 'It Ain't Love' is a more rolling, house-oriented affair with some simmering, teasing loops pitched at the warm up end of the night.

D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Review: REPRESS ALERT!: You know that long hot days are fast approaching when it is Brazilian music that you crave. Thankfully the Scruniversal has got us covered with a second release that is as scorching as the first. It pairs MPB, samba and Latin flair with hard-edged hip-hop and funk stylings across a pair of tunes from Scruscru, each one a different collaboration. The first is alongside Tony Lavrutz and has gorgeous vocals and organic percussion paired with cut-up beats and jazzy keys that will ignite any floor on 'Rave Du Brazil.' Review: The UK deep house pushers over at RESPECT return for their fifth anonymous release, blending samples pastiches of Latin groove and disco into repetitious blurs. Leading with the rhythm-laden 'Pastime', a lackadaiscal drum workout abounds amid a well-produced haze; all while 'Paper' and 'Spank' continue to brighten the mood with sizzling horn blarings and uhhs-and-ahhs of reprocessed, lost soul. Not one to miss for those who like their edits self-evidently skilful and mysterious.

Dancin’ In My Eyes (6:06)
Review: Stereo:type presents its first vinyl release from UK producer Risk Assessment, already known for notable releases on Glitterbox, No Fuss, Midnight Riot and Tinted to name but a few. With four original tracks all ploughing the rich furrow of 80s nu disco vibe that he's been championing of late, with 'Baby Call Me' a glitzy, glitterballl-teasing vocal track with a slice of Cameo-style funk thrown in for good measure leading the charge. 'Can You Dig It?' is loopier and more 'track'-orientated, essential DJ material, while the B-side boasts the filtered, soul-inflected house of 'Want You Back' and the glorious Barry White-esque tones of disco monster 'Dancin' In My Eyes'. Review: The band 2000 Black, who include 4Hero icon Dego among their number, are masters of the broken beat scene, leaders amongst men who whether working alone or with others are always in top form. This two track outing kicks off with 'Soursop & Mango', a bristling, bustling mix of raw drums and bursts of cosmic synth energy that radiates soul, all with neat guitar riffs stitched into the mix. 'Straight Forward Side Steps' is a dusty jam with lovely scruffy claps and much more well defined synth lines adding colour and soul.

Review: 20/20 Vision and Crazy P continue their long and fruitful relationship with a fourth volume of carefully curated and super-fresh new cuts as part of this fine ongoing series. Scandi-disco don Ray Man opens up with typically lush cosmic melodies and loose-limed nu-disco beats with more than a hint of funk. Tigerbalm then heads into a tropical oasis with 'Cosmic Union' (feat Joy Tyson) which has Afro rhythms and steamy vocals bringing the heat. Ruf Dug shows his multi-genre chops again with 'Vape Quarter Rhythm' which is part proto-house cut and part dreamy Italo bliss out with rave whistles and hands-in-the-air chords. Ibiza's Tuccillo closes out with one of his signature Balearic gems in 'Siroco', which is as breezy and carefree as cocktails by the sea at sundown.

He serves up another fine EP of just that here on Razor-N-Tape and soon wins you over with the synth-laced house funk of opener 'Evernight' (feat Stee Downs & Mik). 'Yes Bruv' (feat Mik) has a more low-slung and late-night deep house sound and then things take a jazzy and broken beat direction on the lounge vibes of 'Holding On' (feat Marlena Dae). On the flip side is the hip-swinging goodness of Vincenzo's remix of 'Everynight' amongst other timeless sounds.

Review: The Alloy Cuts label is back with another sweet 45rpm that collides some of the greats of hip-hop past into two new fusion and mash-up jams designed to do plenty of damage to dancefloors. First up is Jurasoc 5 vs Booty Haul with 'Divided Conformelution' which has some sick low ends and booming kicks overlaid with funky guitar riffs and hard bars. Booty Haul's 'Conformstumental' then appears on the flip side as the original sample source for the a1. It's more physical with the bars stripped away and still has plenty of raw funk.

Brief Encounter (12:20)
Review: Whoever Gallery are, they're a wilfully obscure exercise in metatextuality, with the digital frontispiece of this instrumental disco edits EP depicting two gallery punters idly loitering around the blown-up 12" record, as if fawning over it in a white cube. Whatever the case, these are two mysterious post-mid-70s disco-funk edits, which seem to make a mockery of the exclusivity culture endemic to the art world (a maligned practice that goes comparatively uncritiqued in the realm of dance music) - indeed, so far, the tracks have been played out solely by DJ Harvey and Artwork. Obviously, that means this 12" is worth your one dollar... right?!

Hail Jah (3:52)
Review: Blending reggae, disco, soul, funk and roots - comes the reissue of the highly sought-after 7" from 1979 by Gypsy Fari, the first known reggae outfit from Chicago, born in the south side of the city after a chance meeting between St Kitts expat Leroy Webster and local music graduate Kevin Coleman. The pair set out to blur the boundaries of genre with their unique brand of music, spearheaded by Webster's Caribbean roots and fused with the soul and blues of the midwest. On the A-side, 'Chi-Town Reggae' springs out the gate with fast-paced disco-reggae, powered by a relentless rhythm section and Webster's infectious vocal melody. On the flip, 'Hail Jah' is a swaggering, deep roots reggae cut that pays homage to Webster's heritage - which he wrote on the hilltops of the outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica.

Review: Saxophonist Ferdi has previously featured on a few Daebull releases, so it's little surprise to see him making his full-length debut on the eccentric French producer's self-titled label. Daebull and pal Rude Jude handle much of the production, laying down insanely authentic 80s soul, eletcrofunk, P-funk and Balearic synth-pop backing tracks over which Ferdi delivers a string of sublime, stretched-out sax and flute solos. It's a simple concept - authentic, 80s-sounding synth and drum machine instrumentals with solos atop - but one that the trio execute expertly. Yes, there's a whiff of Gerry Rafferty or Kenny G here and there, but that's a key stylistic touchpoint. There's no doubt they mean it (it is, therefore, authentic and not some knowing pastiche), and it all works so well because the backing tracks really do slap hard.

Review: This new 10" from New York label Sunshine Sound (which is often a label said to be recognised as the 'birthplace of the edit') features a couple of legendary edits by the one and only Francois K. They are in fact medleys that find him workings mixing desk hard as he layers in tribal chants, drum funk, sick percussion and plenty of breaks, whistles and more. He did them first back in the disco heyday and yet they still very much have the same uplifting and irresistible impact on dancers now as they did back then.

Review: It is time to succumb to the sounds of the Magic Wand label once more and this eighth sonic spell is another one that will leave you happily helpless. It finds the Coyote lads step away from their fine work on Is It Balearic? to cook up two top edits. First up they offer 'Lonely' - a broody, steamy and shimmering tropical Balearic workout and then comes the organic and lazy drums of 'Western Revolution' with an iconic gravelly vocal. There are folk-tinged Americana sounds on 'Love Home' and laid-back disco licks on the seductive 'Luca' to make this a summer party essential.

Review: Serge Funk, and his contemporaries Micky More & Andy Tee, bring utter floor-shaking heat to Groove Culture with 'Move On Up' and 'Runaway', two four-to-the-floor crowdpleasers working in rapidfire vocal samples and bass licks sifted from the trawled megahertz of funk. Compressed and pumped-out to no end, each track here balances the other out nicely in mutual a barrage of interwoven rhythms and vocal "hups".

Review: Danny Krivit's officially sanctioned re-edits of Earth Wind & Fire's "Brazilian Rhyme" and "Runnin" have been sought-after since they first appeared on a Japan-only 12" back in 2004. In fact, such is demand that even later bootleg pressings now go for silly money online. As this reissue proves, though, they're arguably amongst Krivit's strongest scalpel works. Certainly, his three-minute revision of the always too short "Brazilian Rhyme" teases it out to just the right length, in the process delivering a sweltering, sing-along summer anthem. The flipside revision of the equally as summery "Runnin" is every bit as good, with Krivit making merry with the original's life-affirming scat vocals and killer piano solos.

Review: The publicity-shy, scalpel-wielding Disco Records crew returns with volume five in their ongoing series, bringing with them another quartet of dusty re-edits. As usual, they've largely avoided the obvious in favour of breathing new life into diggers' favourites and the kind of slept-on obscurities ripe for reappraisal. They hit the ground running with 'Summer Grooves', a Chic-esque blast of sunshine-ready disco goodness, before exploring the hybrid turn-of-the-80s disco-with-synths flavours of 'Trying To Get Over'. Flip to the B for 'Persuasion', a more slinky and seductive shufflers marked out by spacey synths and low-slung bass, and 'Do It Anyway', their extended take on a much loved reggae-disco cover of disco-funk staple 'Anyway You Wanna'.

Review: Last time out, back in 2021, Nassau Track Authority served up a swathe of previously unreleased instrumental mixes of songs recorded by Grace Jones at Compass Point Studios, Nassau. This 12" sees the shadowy collective once more dip into the archives of the legendary Barbados-based studio to recover more synth-laden, dub-wise disco instrumentals. They begin with 'Peanut', a Sly & Robbie-fuelled, vocal-free take on Gwen Guthrie's peerless Larry Levan fave 'Peanut Butter', before wallowing in the susp-enseful, slow motion boogie-dub brilliance of 'Adventures' (a take on an old Will Powers single). Over on side B, 'Seventh' is an infectious, musically detailed instrumental take on another Gwen Guthrie classic (the slap-bass propelled 'Seventh Heaven'), while 'Doctor' is a particularly dub-wise, slow-motion mix of what we think is a Thompson Twins classic.

Review: Some artistic edits from a brand new series. We're not sure who the "unknown artist" is behind the reworks (which date from this year and 2016 respectively), but it's clear that they know what they're doing. A-side "Baby Baby Please" is a wonderfully dubbed-out and glassy-eyed revision of a lesser-known Italo-disco/Hi-NRG cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" that boasts a killer vocal breakdown midway through. Over on the flip, "True Destiny" is an epic, low-slung revision of an obscure disco number that rightly emphasizes the heavy groove pushing the track forward and includes some tasty delay and echo trickery.

It is another sublime three-tracker that kicks off with the string-laced and upbeat disco delights of the A1. Second up is a much more slow and sensuous sound that sinks you in deep to a beach lounger as the sun fades into the sea and the sky turns flame red and orange. Things pick up again with the third and final cut - a percussive jumble of organic hits and drums overlaid with a heart-melting vocal sample and deft melodic details that drift by like wispy clouds.

Review: Athens of the North 'house band' East Coast Love Affair recently returned to action with 'I'm So Glad', a driving disco-funk outing tailor-made for sweaty club sessions. For this speedy follow-up, they've recruited effortlessly soulful vocalist Theo Suess and musically flipped the script. Built around skittish lo-fi beats, immersive chords and bubbly synth-bass, 'Tonight' sits somewhere between deliciously deep house and lo-fi boogie. It's genuinely brilliant, with Suess providing an immaculately emotive lead vocal on the A-side main mix. The flip-side 'Dub' is superb, too, with snippets of Suess's vocals echoing across an enveloping, loved-up instrumental backing track.

Not one to succumb to the pressures of our capitalist overlords, the enigmatic producer continues to tinker away on various projects, including the hefty task of renovating an abandoned Masonic lodge into a recording studio in rural New Zealand. While we patiently await new music, we can revel in versions that escaped the typical overthinking that occurs during the album process, instead reflecting the spontaneity and freedom of a touring artist. All tracks here bar one ('Thinking of Dub') were initially released on short-run 7" singles for Echo's early Japan tours, made only available to dedicated fans who attended the live shows. Without further ado, Soundway presents Lord Echo's 'Rarities', a collection of sought-after singles now made very much accessible to you the people.

Review: This special 12" features two tracks that will not be on the vinyl version of the forthcoming AC Soul Symphony, Disco opus "Metamorphosis" featuring a 20 piece orchestra alongside a whole host of top live players. That makes it an even more vital pick up because both are pure disco fire. 'I Want To See You Dance' has the title's classic refrain repeated over big Salsoul style string licks, funky basslines and soloing piano. 'The Talented Mr Adams' is a tribute to the legendary disco producer Patrick Adams and is a super sweet swooner with golden live strings and brass backing up a loose-limbed rhythm and vamping pianos that get you in the mood for love. These two tracks act as a fine teaser for what's to come on the much-anticipated album from a contemporary version of acts like MFSB and Love Unlimited Orchestra.
