Cat: IFGGG 002. Rel: 23 Oct 23
Neighbourhood (original '98 mix)
Neighbourhood (El B remix)
Neighbourhood (Dawn Raid remix)
Review: Long time underground UK stalwart Zed Bias dropped this - one of his many seminal cuts - back in 1999. Now, the dark garage classic 'Neighbourhood' gets reissued alongside some remixes. In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. To close out the EP, Dawn Raid remixes with a high-energy jungle sound full of old-school signifiers. A proper EP for proper dance floors.

Review: Kruder & Dorfmeister's Conversions mix album takes you right back to 1996, when the Austrian duo were taking inspiration from the UK d&b pioneers and giving the sound their own lounge-y twist. For the first time since the mix was released, it's being presented as a partially mixed double vinyl edition, giving you access to some of the seminal cuts which make the mix such an enduring classic. From the easy lead in of DJ Unknown Face's 'Dat's Cool' to the soulful vocal licks and skittering breaks of Omni Trio's 'Nu Birth Of Cool' on to the cosmic jungle of Space Link's 'Time Zone', it's a masterclass through and through.

Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. Familiar names include Daniel Bell, Shy One, Willow, Peggy Gou, Midland, Will Saul and Ron Basejam, but there's also surprise inclusions like Tim Reaper and Comfort Zone teaming up for a signature jungle excursion. This is a heavyweight reflection of everything Phonica has represented for the past two decades, but equally a sign towards where they're heading in the future and it couldn't sound rosier.

Review: London-based producer Otik releases his first album Cosmosis on Martyn's label 3024. The 11-track LP signifies the fourth album on the imprint across its ten-year tenure, showcasing a more introspective side to Otik's musical output. The album leans into delicate melodies, hazy atmospheres and lush analogue sounds, often evoking blissed-out feels and ripples of brilliant colour. Produced three years ago during lockdown, Cosmosis comes after a period of spiritual struggles, where Otik questioned his faith, religious beliefs, and the concepts of right and wrong. While the pandemic allowed ample time for reflection, Otik translated these thoughts into music from his Peckham-based studio, later finding a home on 3024's evolving discography. Keen to release a body of work that explores the journey of enlightenment and the struggles to get there, Otik drew inspiration from the luminary filmmaker Terrence Malick and how Malick portrayed ideas and philosophies in films like The Tree of Life and Voyage of Time. As a result, the record conveys a compelling narrative of rebirth, told through exquisite sound design and a push-pull pace that oscillates across the album.

Review: The North Quarter label serves up nine exclusive tracks on this superb double LP which is the culmination of many years friendship of Lenzman & Dan Stezo. The former lays down the seamless flow while the latter delivers perfectly introspective lyrics in a heart aching falsetto and all the tunes are solely from The Northern Quarter associates. The liquid drum & bass grooves are soulful and soaring, with plaintive pianos draped over the silky sequences. It's a warm and emotive listen for days at home as well as once dance floors open up again. Favourites include Zero T & Unitsouled's frictionless 'Slightest Moment' and FD's deep diving closer 'Top2Bottom VIP.'

Perforation (4:11)
Review: Wilkinson's smash hit 'Afterglow' is given a limited repress on a pretty slice of golden marbled wax, harkening back to a time when the drum n' bass artist lay just on the cusp of stardom. The original press of 'Afterglow', arguably one of the most important songs to galvanize drum n' bass as a truly Top-40-worthy style for the 2010s, has long been out of print. However, that never stopped the song from reaching public stardom, in large part thanks to its contributing vocals from Becky Hill and its lesser known jump-up B-side, 'Perforation'.

Review: Dwarde and Tim Reaper are drum & bass heavyweights so to have them together on one EP is a real treat. Their four-tracker on Fabio's Creative Wax label kicks off with 'Don't Go Away', a cacophony of Amen breaks and celestial chords that tugs you in several directions at once. 'Foliage' then rides a deeper vibe with silky drums and cosmic ambient pads bringing a blissed-out feel. 'Groovin' opens up the flipside with more tough, edgy breaks and plunging bass then 'I Can't Understand' closes out with a lovely bit of subtle vocal euphoria, pitched-up vocals and uplifting drums.

Lunar Eclipse (remix)
Review: 1985 Music bossman Alix Perez returns with a 12" so weighty it'll keep you warm all winter. Slipping back into his darker club-focused material, both cuts remind us how heavy Perez can be when he wants to be. 'CRL' is a fantastic example as it takes the classic droning, harmonic bass textures and sends them to the edge of the cosmos while 'Lunar Eclipse' sees him taking on one of last year's biggest tunes (by Visage & Strategy) and giving it a whole new murky set of armour. Take control.

Mystery Wobbler (dub - Polo Lilli remix) (3:51)
Review: Samurai Breaks is the alias of Sam Langley, who's been throwing down some wild style rave gear for the likes of Sheffield's Off Me Nut amongst many others. Having graced Hooversound last year alongside Nova Cheq in 2022, now he's going alone with this six-strong testament to the frenetic new forms rave is being moulded into. The breaks, the hoover stabs, the MC samples - it's all in there, but there's a twitchy modernism to the way Langley juggles his source material which feels incredibly fresh. You can hear the whisper of footwork influence in the needlepoint rhythmic flex of 'Mystery Wobbler (dub)' while jump up casts its influence over gnarly shocker 'Skippy' and of course there's plenty of jungle vibes flying around this madcap EP from a fierce new talent.

Review: Constant Sound is one of the many labels Burnski aka Instinct is heading up right now and they are all as good as each other. This one focuses on house and tech sounds and welcomes Adam Pitts to the fam with three standouts. 'Gadget Crew' opens up and has a big, high-energy groove with plenty of oversized drum sounds and a retro melody paired with an intriguing soulful vocal. It has a dark garage tinge and is perfect for late-night action. 'Just This Once' is tough and physical, with warped and naughty bass and thwacking great hits irresistible to all. Last all comes a Skins Junglist Crew remix which is exactly that - a fine one for the jungle heads.

First Ascent (8:06)
Review: Simon Huxtable's Aural Imbalance project remains as productive as ever some 25 years on from the first releases, and now newer labels like Okbron are stepping up to carry his work after taking so much inspiration from his approach to atmospheric drum & bass. Despite Okbron's capacity for reissues it seems these two joints are new transmissions and they certainly have a sparkling finish which speaks to Huxtable's experience and precision in the studio, but there's also a gritty bite to the breaks and some rich depth to the synth work which ensures there's a generous dose of personality in these luxurious excursions into the deeper end of d&b.

Rinsa (5:47)
Review: Bristol jungle lynchpin Dead Man's Chest is usually found steering the good ship Western Lore, but back in 2017 he did a series of drops for Ingredients billed as Trilogy Dubs. Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

Review: The latest drop in the Mysticisms Dubplate series welcomes back Persian for another round of reggae-inspired electronics. Once again the artist draws from across a spectrum of bass, digidub and breaks and also throws some jungle into the melting pot. Opener 'Survival Dub' is powered by classic breakbeats and great mic work that is sure to liven up any party. 'Smoke Mari' then slows it down to a fat dub with a vocal sample from a well-known smoker's anthem with plenty of mind-melting effects and stepping rhythms. On the flipside is 'There Is No Love' with a prime junglist drop and last of all comes 'Zatoichi's Troubles' which has devastating bass.

Review: As one of the instigators of the UK 2-Step sound that paved the way for the seminal movements in Dubstep and Grime, Zed Bias, aka Maddslinky, is a true pioneer and stands as one the Godfathers of the UK Bass scene. With a prolific career spanning more than two decades, we're honoured to welcome him into the Unchained family with his debut release on the label.

His powerful 4-track EP echoes both cutting edge modern electronic as well as the nostalgia of UK dance history. All tracks wander into upper BPM territory and sonically span very wide ground; whether this be "Beijing", a track sure to carve itself a place in classic anthem history; or "DoenCa Tropical", a tune which draws new broken-beat boundaries around the 160bpm ethos.

Two tracks feature collaborations with Strategy and Bugz In the Attic's G Force - both music defining legends in their own right.

Spanning both the Drum'N'Bass universe and thought-provoking left-field bass, we hope this fresh release has you covered from club to couch.

DJ Dan vs Dima Pulsar - "Hyperspeed"
Barbitura - "One In The Jungle"
Review: DanJet proclaims itself to be the first Russian drum & bass label, which might be up for debate, but at the very least it would have been one of the first when it first operated in 1997. Spearheaded by DJ Dan, the label drops its fourth vinyl and chooses to, erm, pay tribute to The Prodigy on the A-side via Dan and Dima Pulsar's 'Hyperspeed'. There are more than a few elements from Experience twisted into modern d&b forms on this track, no doubt sure to please older heads and younger generations of ravers alike. Barbitura's 'One In The Jungle' on the B-side is an all-out tear-out driven by sirens, dark side bass and blistering breaks.

Review: DJ Plant Texture aka Bari's Donato Basile makes a Return to Disorder with four blistering cuts of jungle, electro, techno and acid. He is a versatile producer who takes no prisoners and considers no sounds off-limits. This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' These are highly charged and guaranteed dance floor destroyers from this ever-on-point wizard.

Review: Mid 90s atmospheric d&b veterans Pariah have been enjoying something of a re-focus since linking up with Okbron in 2019. The prolific archival label has since invited them back again in 2021 and now they return for round three, and while we don't have the exact provenance of the tracks in question on this record, it hardly matters when the quality is so high. 'Lexicon (Final Mix)' is an aqueous beauty of a track, dealing in sweeping vistas of pads and a light-touch, rolling beat with that classic Pariah finish to it. 'Winds Of Pleasure' is a breezy affair with gossamer-light synth lines and a subtly Balearic feel which is just crying out for a drop at a daytime session this summer.

For the completists it's hard work keeping up, but how are you going to argue with tracks as fire as these? 'Waveform 01' has a lighter feel thanks to the aqueous synth tones slipping and sliding around the crisp breaks, but it still kicks off in earnest when the amens come knocking. 'Waveform 02' is a more heads down affair, but as always ASC creates scintillating atmospheres around the drums which make the listening experience that much deeper.

Review: Tearin Vinyl first released this one back in 1994 and then Vinyl Fanatiks repressed it in 2019 on silver wax, and now the original label brings it back to the fore on yellow 12". It is archetypal jungle from DJ Krome & Mr Time that kicks off with 'Brock Out'. Soulful vocal samples open up before the crashing amens tumble down endlessly next to raw ragga vocals and plenty of wispy synth details. On the flip is 'London Talk' which is just as intense and physical, with old-school breakbeats and a scattering of vocals that add extra heat. Drop these and dancefloor destruction is guaranteed.

Both acts taking the same sample and twisting it in their own way to create two parts, DJ Apache and DJ Unknown's Brain Killers operation goes for more of a party swagger and strong hip-hop and ragga influences while Lewi (who attained the name and reputation of Lewi Screwface due to his previous collabs with the Brain Killers) goes for more of a brutalist drum funk vibe. Here we find them celebrating the contributions and pure skill of James Stephens' FOI alias with this champion slab from 1994. 'Champion Of Champions' brings a strong sense of triumph before murking you up with the vocal layers and cut-glass edits. Deeper into the EP we hit version central as the other two cuts utilise elements of 'Champions' in different ways; 'Stop Pushing' comes with the big euphoric blasts while the Bonus Dud Plate gives a different twist again. This is their fifth drop on Embrace The Real, and once again they've done a bang up job of bringing some fresh ideas to a classic approach. 'Nobody Else' does wonders with a sample which sounds like it could belong to 80s soul diva Stephanie Mills, bringing a powerful dose of melody into the mix before cutting into needlepoint drum funk. '4AMK4' is a relatively chill roller, while 'Fire Is Our Friend' dices up jazzy breaks at a mean clip and dances nimbly on top of the subs and 'Hurt Me No More' swerves directly towards hardcore euphoria, pianos n' all.

Review: Seba & Paradox link up for this new 12" on the cultured Ilian Tape label and in doing so explore all new and hard hitting bass depths. The influential pair serve up two top cuts here bit both hit the mark. 'Volt' kicks off and is turbo charged by synths that come on like electric shockwaves and drill down through the mix of bright chords and tight breakbeats. 'Trezub' is a more lithe rhythm that darts about the stereo field with thundering bass and haunting pads in the distance. Truly devastating stuff.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

Review: Pixel and Mystic Pulse join the Rasta Vibez crew for some skunk-skanked jungle fun. First up is a storming rifle-flex twist on Pato Banton's fun-but-firm statement on herbal legalities. Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. Flip for more smoky sonic sermons as they take on another spark-up standard "Herbalist" with such authenticity you could easily be convinced it's 1992 again... Especially if you've practiced the lyrical content so much you think time travel is a thing. Pure Vibez.

Tao
Review: Italian producer Donato Dozy rightly has a cult following as he has a fantastically well sculpted style whether making ambient deep techno or as is the case here, drum & bass. He opens up with the pulsing loops of 'Mai', which always hints as some sort of big rhythmic explosion that never quite comes. 'Dusty Bones' is a flurry of sci-fi sounds, tribal drums and frosted bass that leaves you in a spin. 'Sanza High' is a DJ Python style half stepper with menacing bass and 'Tao' is a more traditional drum & bass beat with trademark silky synths.

Day By Night (4:10)
Review: Seba's Secret Operations label is continuing its productive run into the archives with this fourth volume of reissue gold. Seba's sound is the kind which transcends the ages, sporting a luxurious, high-end production finish which means tracks like 'Special Ops' hasn't aged a jot in 15 years. 'Day By Night' on the B2 deserves a special mention - this is the Swedish mastermind at his fiercest, toying with stop-start dynamics, folding in industrial strength tones and textures and building the junglism so vivid it nearly bursts out of the speakers and manifests as a 3D object right before your eyes.

Review: The latest collection from the mighty Soul Jazz draws together a myriad of different styles favoured by black British sound systems, not only reflecting the roots of different communities reaching these shores but also the UK twist that that music has received as result. Reggae forms the backbone of the collection, from the blissful consciousness of Pebbles' 'Positive Vibrations' to the more protest-orientated Brown Sugar's 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. But the presence of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins, Ray Keith aka The Terrorist and Digital Mystikz helps show the uniquely British areas into which sound system culture evolved - rave, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep.

Review: Since he first landed on our radar via Vivid a few years back, Yosh has dished out enough high grade garage and breakbeat gear to fuel the scene on his own. Not only a prolific producer, he's also got a razor sharp flair which edges him in front of a crowded scene, and now he's back to Vivid to show us exactly what he's about with a 12-track double-pack, his biggest release to date. In one sense you should know exactly what to expect - elevated steppers and deft rollers, but the fundamental appeal of Yosh is all those ear-snagging traits which make his tracks sparkle, and you never know what they're going to be until the needle's tracking in that groove. Now you can enjoy that sensation 12 times over - a good deal if ever we saw one.

Review: A classic from the mighty Hooj Choons back catalogue, Lustral's 'Everytime' gets a much welcome reissue here, featuring all the mixes from the original version of the release back in 1997. There's Nalin & Kane's sensual and evocative remix which is a true zeitgeist of the progressive house sound in the late '90s - if we've ever heard it. Label co-founder Red Cherry's saucer-eyed and bittersweet sunset breaks makes for an equally memorable remix too, as well as the sunny house vibes of the original mix featured last on the B side.

Review: DJ Fresh is a legend at this point. Whenever he drops new heat it is worth tuning in, especially when it's a 12" picture disc like this from Breakbeat Koas. The A-side is a collab with Buunshin. 'Dancing In the Dark' is a hardcore gem with pitched-up vocals and monstrous breaks over spin backs, raw bass and thrilling synth lacerations. Then comes an AMC Remix of DJ Fresh's 'Heavyweight' that is just that. It rides on silky breakbeats with a rising sense of tension that keeps you locked until the explosive bass and jump-up drum head to the level.

Review: 2019 has been big for Goldie. The late summer saw the anniversary reissue of his second album "Saturnz Return", and now he's put together a bumper collection of drum & bass gems. Across "60 tracks that smashed it" as the release is sub-titled, the proudly British sound of drum & bass is explored and exposed thanks to music from all the key players including Roni Size, Doc Scott, Photex, Krust, DJ Zinc and many more familiar faces. Of course, the Metalheadz boss' own "Inner City Life" kicks off in triumphant fashion and the vibes keep coming thick and fast from there on in.

Back then it came on Aphex Twin's now defunct Rephlex label and has not been available on streaming platforms ever since. All remastered from the original DATs and with a new, original booklet filled with note and ephemera it is an essential cop for fans old and new. The record broken out of the tight genre restrictions of the time to pair complex rhythms with disarming melodies.

Computer Love is a double pack on his own label MYOR that explores downtempo sonic landscapes, deep drum & bass and occasional forays into UKG and breakbeat. It's a kaleidoscopic listen with meticulous craft in each tune and overflowing with fresh melodic ideas as well as his famous smart samples. Previously released singles 'Night Safari' and 'Trust Issues' are standouts amongst a slew of other more left-of-centre sounds.

Review: Standby for another red hot drop from the emerging Parade label. This third outing is another surefire dance floor winner with some mad fusion sounds sure to amp up any crowd. 'Ready' is first up from the eponymous production team and it layers a Fugees vocal over a flurry of breakbeats and ragga vocals with a monstrous bassline powering it along. Carnage. 'Slippers' then flips the script completely mid-tune as a stoned dub gets spun back and flipped into another all-out raga jungle assault with an Underworld sample dropped in along the way.

Genreless, forward-thinking fusion. Here's to the next 100.

Now to mark this year's RSD, their debut album Froge.mp3 enjoys a limited vinyl outing and it sounds amazing for it. Cuts like the sing-along 'On & On' and the lofi dreaminess 'Slowly But Surely' and the sun-kissed summer joint 'Beachin' all still sparkling as bright as they did when they first dropped last year, this is a significant moment for Piri & Tommy. Happy Record Store Day!
