Respiration (Flying High remix) (4:27)
Respiration (4:23)
Review: The latest record to be added to Lil Static's catalogue is 'Respiration', a classic track by Mos Def and Talib Kweli under the duo name Black Star - and featuring an uncredited cameo verse from fellow rap stalwart Common - first released in 1998 on their self-titled album. Known for famously sampling a monologue from the hip-hop/graf documentary Style Wars in its intro, the pair exchange authentic rhymes and riffs, contemplating many ideas in the lyrics such as inner city Brooklyn life, personal philosophies, and Pan-Africanist ideas.

One Love (Mister Mushi edit) (4:18)
One Love (Mister Mushi radio mix) (4:22)
Review: 'One Love', here reissued by DRP, is a classic track that first appeared on the NYC rapper Nas' first album Illmatic, as its final track. With an all-encompassingly raucous boom-bap backing whipped up by Mister Mushi and its namesake drawn from the Bob Marley song, the song is composed as a string of letters written by Nas to his incarcerated friends, including fellow rapper Cormega, who went down in the early 90s - musing on personal loyalties and disloyalties.

Work It Out (4:16)
Review: Beyonce's seventh studio album, Renaissance, was one of her biggest to date back in 2022. It turned out plenty of big hits which got heard on dance floors all over the world and now one of them makes it to this cheeky 7". 'Cuff' was written and produced by Beyonce with additional help from Raphael Saadiq and The-Dream, amongst others, including Chic's Nile Rodgers. And you can hear that in the low-slung disco grovels and funky basslines that are the bedrock for Bey to do her vocal thing. 'Work It Out' comes on the flip for a more slow and percolating funk workout.

Give It To Me How (4:18)
Review: Smoove returns with his label Wack Records and delivers two killer cuts straight from the heart of Motown. Utilizing original multitrakcs from the home of Rick James and The Supremes, Smoove gets his swirv on and delivers two uptempo hip-hop bangers, curveball-tinged with the instrumental backings of Motown. On the A, 'Empty World', we hear an attention-grabbing Nas mashup ('Life's A Bitch'), while the aforementioned artists are equally as well fused on the much more positive B-side.

DJ Flow - "Rhymes Over Egypt" (album version) (3:43)
King Most - "Ridin' Higher" (3:57)
Review: DJ Flow & King Most are two of California's finest hip-hop heads right now and have already had props from the one and only Jazzy Jeff. What they do here is add pure magic to an iconic soul song about Egypt which they are cleverly calling 'Rhymes Over Egypt.' It's a smooth groove with the the iconic chords rolling deep while new bars bring the funk up top and dusty drum breaks keep you moving. On the flip, King Most comes through with 'Ridin' Higher' which takes another soulful favorite and reworks it into something a little more bumping and energetic.

Soul Powder - Bonus Cutz (bonus track) (0:39)
Review: FF45 welcomes Smoove back for his third edits release, and this one surely won't disappoint: The Pharcyde reign over a beefed-up JB break - what's not to like? - while an instrumental and some bonus bits for DJs abound on the flip, making for a more measured listen in contrast to the more vocally immediate, on-the-beat A.

Old Digger (Jim Sharp edit) (3:56)
Review: For the 20th release on the Berlin-based Dusty Donuts label, they have tapped Londoner Jim Sharp again, who was responsible for their very first release back in 2014. On 'Feelin' Good', Sharp and DJ Goce sample J Dilla track on a lush track, with a late night smoky jazz bar kind of vibe throughout. The sound on B side track 'Old Digger" was made famous by Kanye West however Sharp's edit here injects thumping drums, vocal stabs and a different era of Jazz swing.

Vinyl Love (Kero Uno remix) (4:08)
Dont Kill My Vibes (Kero Uno remix) (3:46)
Review: Kero Uno has been kicking for almost two decades, credited with reviving jazz sensibilities in hip-hop almost three decades since it, unfortunately, fell out of fashion around the turn of the century. K1 introduces city-pop and jazz-hop to two of Kdots biggest tracks, 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' and 'Love', the former of which was put on SoundCloud almost a decade ago now and created nothing but buzz. K1 skyrocketed to fame, having his album crowdfunded by excited fans and catching the attention of Kendrick's own mix engineer Derek Ali. The 'Don't Kill My Vibes' mix flips the 2012 hit into a vibraphone-led synthy jazz slice of heaven, while the 'Love' flip, 'Vinyl Love', is a chill, wavey city-pop banger, with subtle brass and airtight percussion coming together in perfect matrimony.

Jurasoc 5 vs Booty Haul - "Divided Conformelution" (3:34)
Booty Haul - "Conformstumental" (3:31)
Review: The Alloy Cuts label is back with another sweet 45rpm that collides some of the greats of hip-hop past into two new fusion and mash-up jams designed to do plenty of damage to dancefloors. First up is Jurasoc 5 vs Booty Haul with 'Divided Conformelution' which has some sick low ends and booming kicks overlaid with funky guitar riffs and hard bars. Booty Haul's 'Conformstumental' then appears on the flip side as the original sample source for the a1. It's more physical with the bars stripped away and still has plenty of raw funk.

Review: Boom Bap Classics does exactly what it says on the tin once more here. For the eighth time, it has chosen some real heat to offer up on 7" as King Tee and The Alkaholiks feature with two of their golden era boom-bap gems. 'Bus Dat Ass' has a mix of raw and dusty drum breaks and big, bouncy bars that bring a party feel. On the flip things get more slow and dirty, the bars are less playful and more serious and the production features squelchy bass and hypnotic Middle Eastern melodies. Two gems, to be sure.

Review: There's a reason that Massive Attack's Blue Lines frequently appears in "greatest albums" lists. To put it simply, it's brilliant, and arguably remains the Bristol-based outfit's finest work to date (though some would argue that the dark and paranoid Mezzanine is possibly better). As this weighty vinyl reissue proves, it's lost none of its hazy, dub-propelled trip-hop charm. All-time classics such as "Unfinished Sympathy", "Safe From Harm" and "Hymn of the Big Wheel" have lost none of their soulful, mood-enhancing brilliance, while lesser celebrated cuts such as "Five Man Army" and "Lately" still sound great despite their vintage.

Review: Ff45 (Friday's Funky 45) welcome Canada's finest Jim Sharp back to the fore with two 7"-ready sure-shots, of the remix/reinterpretation/covers variety. On the A, we hear a flip of J-Lo's pop classic 'Get Right' but reconstructed to dazzling effect, with every part rerecorded impeccably and placed into a fresh breaks-funk context. The B, meanwhile, reinterprets the Armand Van Helden/Common hip-disco-house classic, 'Full Moon'.

Insane In The Brain (Statik Selektah remix) (3:35)
Hits From The Bong (Dj Muggs 2023 remix) (3:00)
Review: Celebrating its 30th anniversary, 'Black Sunday' has always been a favourite hip-hop album from the fringe of the scene. The Californian group would subtly mix in latin influences into their, often strange, beats influenced from A Tribe Called Quest (like on the zany chanting on 'I Ain't Goin' Out Like That'), Beastie Boys and Public Enemy and going on to become huge influences on the impending nu-metal wave (thing the greats like Korn and System of A Down). You, of course, can't talk about 'Black Sunday' without 'Insane in the Brain', which Statik Selektah produced a brand new remix just for this Record Store Day remix 12 inch, as well as a new 'Hits From the Bong' flip from the one and only, the original producer DJ Muggs.

Review: 'Czartificial Intelligence' is the twelfth, yes twelfth, studio album from Czarface, the old-school comic book-influenced hip-hop superpower featuring Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck and the iconic MC duo Esoteric and 7L. Continuing to carry the torch that MF DOOM left to them, the legend shared in the group's adoration of superheroes and villains (even doing a collaboration album with them, his first posthumous release since his untimely passing), Czarface have carved out their own path, leading them to be one of the most recognisable groups in the history of the genre. The lead single 'You Know My Style' is an amazing clash of Deck, The Czar-keys and NYC rapper NEMS, with Esoteric rattling off comic book bars and NBA references against a beat that can only be described as devious.

The Big Bonus Beats (A Jorun Bombay edit) (2:26)
Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit) (4:40)
Review: Jorun Bombay is back once again with more of his masterful beat mash ups and beat juggling 7"s. This is his second this week - well, it's a black wax version of the same EP where the other is bright pink, both on Soundweight. He opens up with 'The Big Bonus Beats' (A Jorun Bombay edit) which has crashing drum hits and an iconic vocal mashed together with some funky guitar riffs and plenty of big, oversized and splashing cymbals. 'Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit)' is a super sweet jam with a plunging synth bassline and more classic vocal samples that lend it a neo-soul feel.

Review: After his hugely well received lovers' rock compilations for this label, Sam Don digs deep into the rich world of UK sweet soul on this - typically - excellent new compilation from the wondrous ashes of the North. He comes up with plenty of mega hard to find and expensive musical treasures that have all been painstakingly researched and tracked down. It was a short lived but fertile scene in the underground back in the 90s and if you didn't; know that already you will after one listen through of this - the sounds are highly danceable with silky, low-lit melodies and steamy and seductive vocals for loved up late night dancing.

It kicks off with 'Just A Flute Thing' which brings nice classical leads dancing about over fresh broken beats with some squelchy synth work involved too. 'Rega Rega' (Revisited) has a deeper, darker bassline and bigger drop to the beats so will being plenty of energy to the right hip-hop party. Another fine outing from the one they call Scientist.

Heavy Heavy finds the trio of Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G. Hastings embracing a back to basics approach formed around working in their own basement studio, keeping the equipment turned on and allowing the ideas to flow freely. Cherry picking the most fruitful moments from these extended sessions has resulted in a striking, invigorating album which bursts forth with the opening salvo of 'Rice' and 'I Saw', clutching you tight and not letting go for the duration of the album. It's been worth the wait.

Sound Of Da Police (LP version) (4:14)
Hip Hop Vs Rap (4:42)
Review: Taking the reins for a repress, Jive Records have taken the important step of revisiting KRS One's rap classic 'Sound Of Da Police'. Besides the popularity of its uniquely catchy 'woop woop' refrain, this early 90s gem was the second and final single from KRS One's debut album Return Of The Boom Bap, and importantly criticizes the hypocrisies of the American justice system, as well as the horrors of racial profiling and police brutality. Besides the events of 2021 making this year the most appropriate time yet in which to re-release such a song, the funk heads at Juno will be keen to spot this classic's sampling of several greats, including licks by Grand Funk Railroad and Sly And The Family Stone.

The track details Ocean's memories of his youth and a time when someone close to him died - someone who had taught him lessons that stayed with him - and so naturally the theme of mortality features a lot. Featuring timeless classics like N.W.A's 'Straight Outta Compton', Dr Dre's Jay-Z-ghostwritten track 'Still D.R.E' and Bahamadia's 'Uknowhowwedo' to name a few. The aim of the compilation is not to prove as an exhaustive list by any means (namely the mysterious absence of Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot and Public Enemy), but to serve as a comprehensive memorial to a genre that changed the world. Printed on super limited green and white 180gm audiophile vinyl, the package comes with an insert with liner notes.

Review: After the fatal crush of 2021's Astroworld Festival, which caused the death of ten people and saw several hospital admissions, any anticipation for trap giant Travis Scott's next album was always going to be mired in controversy. Acquitted of all blame in July of this year, attention has since turned to the much-anticipated Utopia; which serves as both the follow up to 2018's masterwork Astroworld as well as the 2019 JackBoys collaborative compilation with Cactus Jack. Arriving on the heels of the experimental anthology film Circus Maximus (featuring shorts directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Harmony Korrine and Gaspar Noe), with a gargantuan 73 minute runtime and boasting a who's who of features from some of today's most vital artists and producers, including the likes of Playboi Carti, Beyonce, Drake, The Weeknd, Dave Chappelle, Yung Lean, SZA, Kid Cudi, James Blake, The Alchemist and Metro Boomin, the LP offers up yet another markedly impressive sonic display of why Scott (all controversies aside) continues to be heralded as one of the most progressive, single-minded and unique forces within the realms of modern hip-hop.

The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

Review: Tyler, the Creator's fifth studio album was produced entirely by the Californian artist himself, but it does feature guests like Solange, Playboi Carti, Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert. It immediately debuted at number one and it's easy to see why. Rich with a complex fusion of funk, rap and r&b that glides on Cali-synths and neo soul melodies, the whole thing is tethered to the ground with a hefty low end and follows the narrative of a love triangle as told by American comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Arguably his best work to date, the production is next level and storytelling wholly involving.

Smoove - "Flava"
Frezidante - "Technique"
Review: Smoove's Wack Records is back with another sure shot 7" of boom bap hip-hop goodness, as the seasoned producer serves up a killer flip of Craig Mack's classic 'Flavour In Your Ear'. There's some serious weight to this version - a real neck-snapper with some big band sass thrown in for good measure. On the B-side, Frezidante steps up with a bold re-imagining of Eric B & Rakim's 'Technique', working some 70s soul tones into the mix to provide you with another party-starting anthem, no questions asked.

Review: The production pair of Tuure Tammi and Juha Sarkkola hail from Hameenlinna, Finland and first came together to record as The Blassics in 2010. Initially it was an instrumental funk project that looked to record collecting, sampling and deejaying for inspiration and then ended up as a six-piece live band in 2013. Here they appear on the flip of this 7" from Odd Funk with 'I Wanna Show A Lil Trick', and they are also involved in the making of A-side cut 'Fankkisafka', which has Rosteri, a Finnish rap group from Kuopio, serving up the bars.

House Of Pain Anthem (2:39)
Review: Reissued, as it should, via the original label on which this ubiquitous single first made its mark on the world, House Of Pain's 'Jump Around' comes to our attention once more. A spiritual spin-off of Cypress Hill - the track's beatsmith DJ Muggs originally made the beat for the group, and it was only given to House Of Pain after being later rejected by Ice Cube - the song houses an undeniable demonstration of how samples themselves, when worked into the track in the right way, can work just as effectively as melodies in 'hooking' the listener. Notably, the high-pitched squeal, lifted from Chubby Checker's 'Popeye The Hitchhiker', occurs 66 times throughout.

Review: Joji (George Miller) debuted his first album-length solo project Ballads 1 in 2018, after reviving the formerly semi-private moniker whose first incarnation could originally only be found on YouTube. At first, Joji was a low-key outlet, via which the onetime internet comedian (popularly masquerading as Filthy Frank) could explore his sensitive side, in the form of lo-fi beats and whisper-sung verses. Popular intrigue in the Joji alias led to a hugely popular impetus for Miller to release more music under the name, justifying this album's impressive corralling of the production talents of his favourite fellow artists: Trippie Redd, Clams Casino, D33J and Shlohmo. Now reissued, not for the first time, on an indie exclusive version via GLXY, Joji is more than living his introspective side down.

Q TIP - "Vivrant Thing" (3:16)
Review: First released way back in 1999, Raphael Saadiq's Q-Tip-sporting "Get Involved" is a warm and woozy, retro-futurist chunk of soul/hip-hop fusion that harked back to an earlier musical age. It remains an arguably underappreciated dancefloor bomb and here gets the reissue treatment courtesy of the freshly lauched 45 Jams imprint. It comes backed by another stone cold classic from Q-Tip, "Vivrant Thing" - a cut first featured on the flipside of the Tribe Called Quest member's much more celebrated "Breathe Don't Stop" single. It's a little more stripped back than the A-side, with Q-Tip delivering his distinctive flows over a crunchy and fuzzy, Jay Dee produced backing track crafted from samples from an old funk record.

How Superstitious (vocal mix) (4:14)
How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

Review: Since debuting on Bromance in 2013, Kaytranada has become one of the leading lights on the future R&B scene. Given his track record, it's understandable that there's plenty of hype surrounding 99.9%, his long await debut album. The 15-track sees him showcasing the depth and variety of his beat making, production and compositional skills. Thus, the string-drenched jazziness of "Bus Ride" is followed by the off-kilter R&B pop of "Got It Good", and the Onra-ish synth-hop soul of "One Too Many" sits side by side with the double bass, Rhodes and Latin-influenced beats of "Despite The Weather". It's pretty expansive, clocking in at 15 tracks deep, but the quality never dips throughout. Recommended.

Review: It may have been released digitally six months ago, but Kanye West's "Jesus Is King" album - his 12th solo set in total - has finally made it on to vinyl. By now, most will have already heard it, but for the uninitiated "Jesus Is King" sees West meditating on Christianity, offering up a tight 27-minute set of tracks that draw influence from (or explicitly sample) gospel music in all its forms. It's still a hip-hop album of course, it's just that the beats, musical choices (gospel choirs, loops from killer records by gospel soul act The Whole Truth etc) and lyrics are closer to the black American gospel tradition than anything West has released before.
