Review: Where do you start with Misfits? The American punks enjoyed six incredible years following their formation in Lodi, New Jersey, and between 1977 and 1983, helping increasingly sizeable crowds throw caution to the wind work themselves into a frenzy. They also pioneered the 'horror punk' sub genre, essentially tapping into the movement's most base and fundamental elements to deliver something that was truly terrifying to the mainstream. Which, in comparison with the group themselves, could be pretty much anyone. Raw and gritty barely comes close, with Misfits tracks sound like they have been pieced together from the dismembered parts of rock & roll demons in some beaten up old garage by the side of a highway that was never completed. If that sounds like an abstract analogy, this ferocious live recording sets the record straight - a wild ride through a snarlingly good set.

Review: Misfits have never been ones to mince their words. Pioneers of the horror punk sub sect, their work has been relentlessly unapologetic since the band's inception in 1977, not to mention unapologetically raw, edges sharp enough to tear through a pulmonary artery within about two seconds of hearing their frantic output. The group, as you might expect from the name, also never shied away from wit either, and this particular live recording is a fine case in point. As ever, the recording is a juggernaut and almost non-stop, a rapid fire, propellant, and shouty adventure through various aspects of their back catalogue, but with elements switched up. Listen to this version of 'Teenagers From Mars', then , and you'll hear different (hilarious) words, none of which we can really print here, and the cover of Samhain is similarly smile inducing, while also the stuff of nightmares.

Review: While they're currently one of the biggest pop-rock/metal acts on the planet, many remember a time when Bring Me The Horizon were the much maligned deathcore kids with emo fringes. Gaining momentum with each album, and slowly morphing their sound into a form of electronica-tinged metalcore over time, it was 2013's fourth full-length Sempiternal that not only silenced naysayers but elevated the group to staggering new heights, thanks to the addition of keyboardist Jordan Fish, who remains their secret weapon to this day. Produced by the iconic Terry Date (Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park), his presence as well as the sonic indebtedness to the aforementioned acts, led to an expansive yet cohesive work that married heaving breakdowns with ethereal post-rock, while showcasing elements of nu-metal and post-hardcore that would embolden their future direction. Lyrically delving into frontman Oli Sykes' battle with ketamine addiction through harrowing and earnest depictions, and featuring his first foray into cleanly sung vocals, Sempiternal remains not only the band's high watermark, but the album that legitimately "changed it all". Celebrating its ten year anniversary on a lush picture disc, it appears enough time has passed to finally class the LP as the modern classic it has always been.

Review: Following on from their acclaimed genre-pioneering debut album Milo Goes To College in 1982, frontman Milo Aukerman of California punk heroes Descendents literally did just that, to pursue a career in biology of all things. With his bandmates touring the record without their titular vocalist and stretched between groups, especially drummer Bill Stevenson who wound up touring with Black Flag in the interim, the desire to craft a sophomore follow up was constantly at the back of their minds, and once Aukerman returned home to hear the more pop-centric direction of the new material Stevenson had been crafting, they jumped into the studio with little to no prep time to record what many regard as the first true pop-punk album - I Don't Want To Grow Up. With their earlier, raw sound slightly more polished and embracing hook-laden melodies at almost every sonic turn, mark our words when we say that there would be no Blink-182, no Millencolin and no persistent sub-genre squabbles if it wasn't for this potent and everlasting gem of a record, which also served as the first of two albums with guitarist Ray Cooper, while being their last with original bassist Tony Lombardo (who simply didn't want to tour).

They have worked on reimagining songs from the former's well-received 2021 album Glow On and the results bring all new perspectives and dynamics to tunes like 'Mystery', 'Alien love Call' featuring Blood Orange and 'Underwater Boi.' Both Turnstile and BADBADNOTGOOD are untouchable in their fields right now with rave reviews for their records as well as their live shows. This is another standout project.

Review: In December 1980, The Clash released the sprawling 36-song Sandinista! album, which marked their transition from rabble rousing guitar slingers to the genre-splitting musical experimentalists that inhabited the second part of their career. This high quality recording catches them in mid change, still including the pogo-friendly likes of 'London Calling' - the opening tune here - but also an echo chamber-drenched version of reggae-inspired original 'Bankrobber' and their hip-hop anthem 'The Magnificent Seven'.

Review: Second Layer consist of Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey, better known as members of the post-punk group The Sound. Their lesser-known duo project was closer to the style of buzzy post-punk trailblazer by Alan Vega - and this 11-track compilation album documents the best of the music released in the period from 1979 onwards, including several tracks restored from the original tapes, and all chock-full of the distinctive 'wasp' synth and overall oppressive mix. With their music historically interpreted as a gloomy rumination on technological impositions and class war, it's no wonder the band settled on the name 'Courts Or Wars' here - arguably they're one and the same.

Review: Bristol's heavy post-punk groups Idles present their first full length album after a slew of records dating back to 2012. Brutalism collects the best of the bands antics, from vocals that shift from wailing snarls and smokey mob calls to punkish drawls, or the more spoken word and poetic emotional ballad that is album closer "Slow Savage". Guitars can thrash away or chill out melodically in the background, with the character of this album's songs striking up a familiar feeling of late-'90s punk to mid-2000s indie. Album highlights for us include "Mother", a song championing one woman's die hard working week, to the screeching, distorted anthem "Stendhal Syndrome".

Review: A lot of bands have mystery and mythology surrounding them. Few can command the same level of interest as Rudimentary Peni. The British anarcho-punks have been going since 1980, and in that time put out just four albums and a handful of EPs. Oh, and a live recording from a gig in Derby, England, in 1993, released 12 years later by Sheffield Tape Archive.

All of which is besides the point when you realise how hard it is to find any photos of any band member, and how little they've courted press or anything tied to the music industry at any point in the past 40 years. Cacophony is their second LP, landing in 1988, and straddles nosebleed metal, tough garage rock, mind-melting punk, and some stuff we can't really think of words for. Frantic, fun, and more than a little mad.

Anarchy In The UK (Test Dept remix) (5:10)
Feeding Off The Sweat (Maral Mahmoudi remix) (6:03)
Review: Pioneering punk outfit Crass continue with their ambitious The Feeding Of Five Thousand Remix Project, a self-professed testament to just how multifarious the group were when they dropped The Feeding back in 1978. Melding elements of rap and grime, before either were even a thing, with raw and raucous anarchistic guitar spirit, there's a lot that can be done with those original stems.

This is the fourth case in point, which involves the innovative and hugely influential sonic industrialist Paul Jamrozy, AKA Test Dept's most iconic member, who here delivers something that's part-ode to the source material, and part-nod to his own outfit, which is also sadly no more. Flip to find an altogether different beast, from dublab and Ninja Tune's Los Angeline production wizard, Maral Mahmoudi.

Remember (reprise mix) (2:02)
Review: It's not often someone other than Omar S releases on his FXHE label. And it is never that he has put hardcore post-punk. But we're not complaining. There's a real dance floor chug to this new EP that would have been masterfully deployed by dexterous DJs like the late Andrew Weatherall. The whole thing has been recorded, produced and mixed by Alex Smith himself, while the trio that is Decliner are the ones who wrote the filthy guitars and laid down the sleazy drum beats. The tunes are mired in fuzz and grime and have snarled lyrics that really cut through the darkened biker disco vibes. Excellent stuff.
