Review: Anagrams is an Atlanta-based collaboration between Jeff Crompton and JD Walsh which finds the Balmat label moving beyond the typically electronic ambient music they've carried to date, instead embracing a mellow strain of instrumental music drawing on jazz, folk and country and landing somewhere in the liminal space between. Crompton plays alto and tenor sax, electric piano, organ and clarinet, while Walsh stretches out on experimental guitar approaches, adventurous synthesis and drum programming. It's a delicate affair, as it typical for Balmat releases, and imbued with a warmth that can only come from sincere human interaction.

We also heard from Andrew Wasylyk late last year when he offered up his second LP for the esteemed Clay Pipe Music label. Now it is to Edinburgh's Athens of the North for Parallel Light, another collection of sumptuous ambient sounds that are so much more than just background music. The album is actually an alternate mix of his 2020 long player Fugitive Light And Themes Of Consolation so offers a different perspective with plenty of moving spiritual-jazz and neo-classical sounds that help paint alluring musical landscapes.

Mein Tanzlied (5:06)
Dir (4:49)
Der Schnupfen (4:47)
Abends (4:24)
Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Review: Around 2008 The Black Dog landed on Soma with Radio Scarecrow. At this point the shape-shifting project was well-established as a separate entity from the early Warp years, as original member Ken Downie was joined by Martin and Richard Dust to extol a faintly gothic strain of electro-techno romanticism. 'Ripheadv9' is a fine case in point - a three-dimensional sound world shrouded in grey cloud but shot through with flashes of technicolour light. There's industrial pallor, synthetic melancholy and a heavy payload of atmosphere in abundance on this finely sculpted modern masterpiece, which has been revived with even greater detail thanks to this remastered CD edition on their own Dust Science label.

Review: Pablo Bolivar & Nacho Sanchez are deep smiths who know how to craft a well-rounded album. They do so here for the Seven Villas label with Distances, which travels far and wide into electro, ambient and techno fusions. Straight off the bat, 'Distant Planets' is a cinematic sound with widescreen pads and seductive electro rhythms. There is plenty of meaning and emotion in the pad work throughout this record whether in the downbeat dub sounds of 'Aquarium' or prickly electro-tech of 'Near Future'. Sophisticated stuff from front to back that comes almost a decade after the pair last worked together.

Review: Brussels-based Echo Collective is an extended crew of classically trained musicians helmed by Neil Leiter and Margaret Hermant. While they've been active for some time and worked on countless projects, Plays Amnesiac - a re-imagining of Radiohead's 2001 album of the same name - marks their full-length debut. It's an undeniably impressive collection, with Thom Yorke and company's glitchy, heavily electronic original songs re-cast as neo-classical pieces rich in arresting clarinet and oboe lines, jazzy live drums, cut-glass violins and gentle orchestration. Occasionally projects like this can feel a bit gimmicky, but Plays Amnesiac simply oozes class from start to finish. There are no cheesy gimmicks here, just sublime, classical-jazz fusion cuts that dance from the speakers like the soundtrack of a film we've yet to see.

Review: According to the maestro himself, Roger Eno, The Skies They Shift Like Chords is a record about transience, subtle and pronounced changes, and, in many ways, the march of evolution in music and life itself. The celebrated piano and string-focused artist laid some serious groundwork for high expectations on his debut LP, and now elevates that blueprint towards the heavens with this stunning album.

Utilising an array of instruments - electric guitars, flute organs, bass clarinet - remarkably most of the pieces here are based on improvisations which then developed into full blown tracks, a process Eno describes as capturing "snapshots" we would otherwise risk losing in the ether. Contemporary classical at its most captivatingly beautiful, this is the very definition of timelessness, drawing on modern and age-old techniques to forge something anew.

Odda is a new label emerging from the Leaf Label firmament, which should give you some idea of where the sound - and indeed quality - rests. The first release is a debut for Flaer, otherwise known as Realf Heygate, who delicately builds up pastoral musings with a strong British psychedelic vibe. 'Pasture' in particular is a beautiful folk soliloquy on acoustic guitar with all the scrapes and slides captured in magnificent detail. Elsewhere the sound is more embellished, but whatever the approach it's reliably beautiful, making for a strong debut for label and artist alike.

Review: Lowless does a fine job platforming emergent artists immersed in modern deep techno, where the fractured pulse of electro and d&b can be as much of an influence as traditional 4/4 and ambient. Italian artist Formant Value is the latest to sign to the Parisian label, and their approach to the sound is absolutely on point. Pointillist beat arrangements and dub processing pass through carefully shaped spaces, utterly crisp and defined and thoroughly meditative. If you can't get enough of labels like Amenthia or the sound of Konduku, Dino Sabatini et al, then you're going to thoroughly enjoy this album.

If you don't know the backstory then Fred Again and Brian Eno being on the same record might seem rather unlikely. One is an ambient innovator and long-time musical wizard who has worked with the like of David Bowie on his most seminal albums, and the other is a dance music powerhouse who has turned out plenty of pop hits under his own name and worked on even bigger ones with stars like Ed Sheehan. But as a youth, Fred was mentored by Eno, so there you go. Together they fuse their respective sounds perfectly - Fred's diary-like vocal musings over Eno's painterly synth sequences, the whole thing an immersive and escapist masterclass.

RECOMMENDED
Have you heard much as warm as 'But Not In This Room' recently? A subtly mesmerising introduction to a stunningly beautiful album, fans of DNTEL's lusher ends should take note, albeit in this instance we're talking endless notes and soft chimes rather than anything you might call a song.

Most of My Seat & Weep feels similarly like it's warming up, 'Yellow Leaf Flutters On A Nail', for example, is akin to stepping into a gong bath on a hot summer's day. Those who have will understand. In terms of musicality, 'Petals', featuring Emile Frankel, might take first prize here - its slowly emerging piano keys gradually finding one another to form a distinct arrangement that's neither forceful nor benign. Before you know it, you're in and never want to leave. Ever.

Review: The prolific pace of KMRU's elevated ambience continues to run in contrast to the patient, considered sonic content with this new release for Finnish label Other Power. The three long-form pieces contained on this release were commissioned by the Helsinki curatorial and commissioning agency PUBLICS, and as ever it's an opportunity for the Nairobi-born artist to reflect upon environmental sound and audible architecture, framing his field recordings in elegant, sustained spatial sound design which ranks amongst some of the most engaging contemporary ambient in circulation right now.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Manchester producer, sequencer designer and Cong Burn label boss John Howes made the eight untitled tracks here entirely using a Nord Modular G2, Elektron Machinedrum and Monomachine - a rig he characterizes as "an authentic 2006 studio, best listened to on Windows XP Media Player or Winamp." But, while the modular trend sometimes spawns a certain over-the-topness - after all, with so many opportunities at your fingertips, why wouldn't you explore a few too many - his productions are notable for a certain sense of restraint, or at least leaving space for the really good ideas to poke their heads through the mix and make themselves known. When you see music described as "multidimensional constructs of stereo panned synthetics and slithering ambient techno" you just know they're going to sound twice as good on headphones and in this case they truly are a treat for stereo-loving ears, again, subtly fizzing around your headspace rather than performing obvious tricks. While the music itself is serene and relaxed enough to be classed as ambient, it's anything but lethargic, its parts constantly on the move as they coalesce around a dub rhythm or a head nodding techno pulse, slowly but surely drawing you into their quietly crazy and beautiful world. Compulsive joy.

Prang (12")
Cat: NMBRS 70. Rel: 17 May 23
Prang (feat Huerco S)
Sisu (feat Cucina Povera)
Review: Perko is one of those newer-school experimental artists whose fingers straddle many pies, but who nevertheless refuses to allow this inner tendency towards versatility to hold him back. The FELT label owner has welcomed artists as far-flung as Civilistjavel! to Moxie into his inner circle; and the fruits of this open-mindedness are more than translated into his latest EP for Glaswegian dance legends Numbers. 'Prang' errs on the side of playfulness, giving some hot seconds of pure danceable flavour. Huerco S lends his usually-texturally-rich addprod to the nominal A-sider, a rather impressive future-garage-acid cut that recalls some of Objekt's earlier stuff, while regular collaborator and mournful vocalist-producer Cucina Povera crops up on the ambient dub plunger-into-the-sound that is 'Sisu'.
