Hot To Trot (6:28)
My Favorite Things (6:49)
Review: A formerly rare, vanishingly released record by Cuban violinist Alfredo De La Fe, 'Hot To Trot', from 1979, now gets a worthy reissue on the original label for the single, Cirollo. First appearing as a single and later on the debut self-titled album, Alfredo, the original version later appeared twice, on both sides of the record, as part of a 2014 reissue. This time around, however, we hear the rapid-firing-stringsy disco heater resound alongside De La Fe's version of 'My Favourite Things' on the B-side, which is as you might expect; a hazed-out, wordless version of the partially folk-transmitted pop standard.

The Very Polish Cut Outs: Sztossingery EP (remixes) (B-STOCK)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Case slightly cracked, product in perfect working order***

The latest missive from the Very Polish Cut Outs imprint, whose back catalogue is mostly made up of inspired re-edits and reworks of obscure old musical gems from Poland, is a little bit different. It sees a wealth of the label's artists rework tracks from Polish rapper Belmodawg's cult 2021 mini-album 'Hustle As Usual'. As far as we can tell, they're mostly quite radical rebuilds, but that's no criticism since there's tons to get the pulse racing throughout. For proof, check the gorgeous Italian dream house-meets-hip-house revivalism of Schmoltz's version of 'Pappadelle Alla Arrabbiata', the bleep and breaks revivalism of Speek's mix of 'Wte I Wewte', Polotronic's bouncy, late-80s garage-house re-fix of 'Poppyn Universe', and the dreamy d&b flex of Pejzaz's version of 'Te Tereny'.

Eight years on from his last After Dark compilation for Late Night Tales, font of all musical knowledge Bill Brewster returns with a fourth instalment. According to the man himself, it's a 'freestyle' selection with 'low and slow' the overriding theme. That loose but logical concept allows Brewster to showcase a diverse range of selections that defy easy categorisation. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, with our current pics including the synth-heavy Balearic voodoo of 'Idle Hours' by Idle Band, the Weatherall-esque chug of Hotel Motel's terrific remix of Jeb Loy Nichols' 'Don't Drop Me', the dub disco-goes-cosmic disco squelch of Ray Mang remixing Khruangbin, the deep synth-pop sweetness of Debbie & The Code's 'Code of Love', a terrific Naill edit of Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'So What', and the deep electro of Carl Finlow.

Review: The soulful title track to her album of the same name, "Bad For Me" is remixed here with a bit more flair by Larry Levan! The tune skips along at a really upbeat little pace, not really club but with more of a boogie flavour overall and it's backed by a mellower number with some jazzy George Duke production!

Keep Dancing (4:13)
Review: Having recently delivered a string of must-have Brit-funk reissues, the crate diggers at Backatcha Records are now treating us to some seriously obscure tropical disco. Both tracks originally appeared on the flipside of a self-released, 1982 EP from St Kitts and Nevis percussionist and vocalist Gerard PJ Brown. Both cuts were recorded in Puerto Rico, but the sound is undeniably Caribbean in flavour. 'Sexy Lady' is a killer boogie-era disco number laden with spacey synth sounds, rubbery bass and punchy brass, with Brown's vocals sat atop. Over on the flip, 'Keep Dancing' is a superb dub disco number in which Brown's percussion skills come to the fore atop a synth-sporting reggae groove. In a word: essential!

Doing Our Own Thing
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight tears along seams of outside and inside sleeves. Product in otherwise perfect condition***

Back in November 2018, Oli Stewart AKA Casbah 73 delivered his most wholehearted tribute to the disco era yet, the brilliant "Love Saves The Day". On "To Be Free", he continues in a similar vein, doffing a cap to the pioneers of the Philly Soul sound via cut-glass strings, crunchy Clavinet lines, tasty electric piano solos, walking bass and a lead vocal from Angela (Angie) Gooden that stirs memories of disco divas of old. Stewart and his cohort of musicians go a little wild on the mostly instrumental disco-funk flipside, an exercise in dueling solos, lusty Latin horns, flanged guitars and heavy percussion that will get you hot under the collar for nine, all-action minutes. Brilliant stuff from start to finish from the experienced producer: don't sleep on this one.

Legend of the Madrid scene Casbah 73 is back with a new one for Kraak & Smaak's Boogie Angst here, featuring four new sweltering tracks. The message of environmental politics on 'Let's Invade The Amazon' sung by Hawaii by-way-of Texas' Tonya Wilcox is backed by a low slung disco arrangement, followed by the late night boogie-down instrumental 'Pale Splash Of Blue'. Over on the flip, remixes come from some right legends of the scene; Yoruba Soul takes the track deeper as expected, while Razor N Tape main man JKriv goes for a tropical vibe.

Doing Our Own Thing (Dimitri From Paris remix part 2) (4:57)
Review: Monsieur Dimitri from Paris works his magic on Casbah 73's organic disco grooves with a remix treatment that surpasses all expectations. Casbah's original track may sound like a band-recorded take with added production sheen, but it's actually a deceptively well-made track recorded by a talented solo artist. Dimitri brings added wompy disco-house heat to the track in two parts, with the first part focusing on the more bangerific elements of the original, and the B (part two) stripping things back to focus on the more minimal, solo dubby parts.

Review: Oceanic Zones is a brand new album on a brand new label. CCO is the artist and the fledgling label is Silum which is brought to us from the Liechtenstein Alps via Zurich. This is a stylish electro outing with elastic chords and silky pads that all, we are told, explore 'the layers of the sea.' The A-side is the more cheerful and represents the light-flowed upper regions of the ocean while the flip side is where things get darker and more menacing, as you would expect as you head down to the ocean floor.

Review: Electro Wayne's mid 80s-focused Circuitry project get busy on Peoples Potential Unlimited with two starlit synth boogie originals; "She's Just That Type Of Girl" is a playful east coast funk flex with a slight freestyle touch to it. Harmonies, light touches on the keys and exceptional drum production, it's a sassy slice that will warm-up any floor. "Under Pressure" lowers the tempo but thrusts up the sensual urgency with great percussion and come-to-bed spoken word. Authentically done.

Some high-grade South African gold here, as the admirable AfroSynth imprint offers up a fresh pressing of an obscure - but utterly magnificent - set first released back in 1991. Like a lot of black South African dance music from the period, Living For The City, Citi Express's sole full-length, brilliantly blurs the boundaries between kwaito, deep house and what was then called garage-house, with a few nods to the breakbeat-driven roll of hip-house and the glassy-eyed low-warmth of UK street soul. Highlights include the MFSB-sampling, piano-sporting rush of 'Love Is The Message', the Club Zanzibar-friendly 'Victim of Your Love' and 'It's Too Late', and a superbly loved-up kwaito cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Living For The City'.

20/20 Vision and Crazy P continue their long and fruitful relationship with a fourth volume of carefully curated and super-fresh new cuts as part of this fine ongoing series. Scandi-disco don Ray Man opens up with typically lush cosmic melodies and loose-limed nu-disco beats with more than a hint of funk. Tigerbalm then heads into a tropical oasis with 'Cosmic Union' (feat Joy Tyson) which has Afro rhythms and steamy vocals bringing the heat. Ruf Dug shows his multi-genre chops again with 'Vape Quarter Rhythm' which is part proto-house cut and part dreamy Italo bliss out with rave whistles and hands-in-the-air chords. Ibiza's Tuccillo closes out with one of his signature Balearic gems in 'Siroco', which is as breezy and carefree as cocktails by the sea at sundown.

They have cooked up a selection of versions of 'Rosso Carnale' which, we understand, lyrically touches on the colour red and the gentle carnal forces of nature sung in Italian. There is a sped-up version from Bottin, a sparse mix from Deux Control and standout Mutant version with tougher drums but nice silky dub chords and a bright Italo version full of 80s synth nostalgia.

Supposedly unleashed from his vault, hoard, locker, whatever you want to call it - comes these two sampledelic monsters. Brickwalled in post and erring on the harder side of things, 'One Night In NYC' sounds as fitting for the soundtrack to an exploitation crime blockbuster from the 1970s as it does on a leading side of 12" wax. 'Love Sense', meanwhile, is more one for the lovebirds on the floor.

Review: Don't let the "Coldwave" tag fool you: this EP from Dutch archival imprint Music From Memory is every bit as glassy-eyed and loved-up as the rest of their left-of-centre, Balearic-minded catalogue. German drummer and composer Curt Cress first released "Dschung Tek" in 1992, layering his own dense tribal drums across a tropical, ambient house and dream house influenced backing track on the brilliant "Long Version", before stripping it back to a loved-up, Ibiza-friendly house cut on the "No Live Drums" version. Both mixes can be found on this reissue, alongside a trio of similarly percussive, tropical-minded cuts from the artist's 1983 LP, "Avanti". All three are ace and almost as good as the more floor-focused title track.

'Change', his first single for Italian imprint 'It's a Pleasure', plough a similar furrow. In it's A-side 'Club Mix' form, the track is a mid-80s style dancefloor workout - all synths, drum machines and catchy female vocals - that doffs a cap not only to Italo-disco and proto-house, but also the chart-bothering Latin freestyle escapades of Miami Sound Machine. It's genuinely great, with a slightly more early house-influenced remix by Marvin & Guy and a handy, DJ tool style 'FX-a-pella'.

Following up a precursory EP of the same name, OASIS is the latest eletro-funk-and-soul statement of intent from DARIUS. Hailing from Paris, the producer follows hotly in the footsteps of the likes of Daft Punk and Cassius, albeit lending a soulful downtempo bent to the well-known "French touch" style. This is primo boogie from the late 80s now landing on 45rpm for the very first time. It's been taken from the tape archives of London singer-producer Tony Shand and kicks off with the vocal version of 'Nothing's Happening'. His rather deadpan vocal has an aloof kind of allure next to the squelchy bass and glowing keys. The instrumental strips it away to allow the retro production to shine.

Review: It is now 40 years old but copping a reasonably priced vinyl version of Faxe's 'Time For Changes' is still a tough ask. But no need to worry because ZYX have got this super reissue version out in time for its 40th anniversary. It comes with the dazzling original version complete with silky Italo arps and chilly retro drum machine sounds and also an instrumental, plus the usual remixes from Flemming Dalum on the flip. He extends the breaks and makes the tune a little more suited to contemporary DJ play.

Bossa Nova Baby (2:56)
I Got You (3:51)
Review: The fourth EP from Florence on their own Florence label is simply entitled 'Funk.' And that is what we get in two different variations on this limited 45rpm' There is an old swing feel to the opener which has vocals that Elvis would be proud of. 'Bossa Nova Baby' is lovely and hard-hitting with hand claps and steel drums adding fuel. On the backside is 'I Got You' which is a more sweet soul sound driven by funky brass and prickly bass motifs. Two golden oldies for sure.

70s Lonely Hustler (4:36)
Review: Croatian producer Funky Destination is back with an irresistible funk bomb here in the form of this new 45rpm on Sound Exhibitions out of Italy. It comes on limited edition red vinyl and opens up with 'I Wanna Love Ya' which is one of his signature grooves completes with snappy hits and jangling guitar lines. It's a loopy affair that bursts to life with the arrival of some big trumpets and has a throwback turn of the millennium feel. 70s Lonely Hustler' is the flipside jam and is a more organic and loose rhythm peppered with Latin energy, bird calls, tambourines and much more.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corners of outer sleeve, product unopened & in excellent condition***

Minoru Fushimi originally released Thanatos Of Funk in 1985, proving that boogie wasn't exclusive to the US. You can hear his Japanese culture coming through on this incredible album, not least reinterpreting traditional song 'Dompan', but in truth this is a faithful and on-point run at everything electro funk stood for in the mid 80s. There's that necessary streak of humour in tracks like 'Disco Thesis', but primarily this is all about how dope that Moog lines and slick bass slaps sound mixed up with the swathes of vocoder. If you're serious about boogie, you might have had this one in your sights for some time. Finally, your chance has come, so don't waste time snapping up this stellar boogie bomb.
