The Rapture Pt III (B-STOCK)

&ME & Black Coffee - "The Rapture Pt III" (8:06)
&ME - "LIFE" (7:35)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

&Me and Black Coffee make for something of an Afro house dream team here. The latter has long been this sound's pin-up and has gone from playing in South African townships to producing with Beyonce and winning Grammy Awards over the last decade. Now deep in his latest Ibiza season, he unveils collaborative track 'The Rapture' (Pt III), a deep rolling cut with spine-tingling chords and a rich atmosphere. &ME then goes solo for 'LIFE', a shuffling percussive groove with spoken words and enchanting chords to make for a classy two-tracker.

Machines Of May (7:25)
Gadget (7:21)
Dark As Night (7:43)
Swiss (6:26)
Review: Since returning to action in 2016 after a seven-year break, 1990s techno survivor Lee Renacre AKA 100 Hz has released some of the best music of his career. This fine four-tracker marks the long-serving Londoner's first outing on Romanian imprint Amphia, who are best known for serving up sparse, minimalistic tech-house. As you'd expect, there's a slightly fuller sound here, though sonically it's as pleasingly druggy and mind-mangling as much of the imprint's output. Renacre brilliantly flits between trippy, arpeggio-driven, house-tempo techno (the otherworldly 'Machines of May'), dubstep-influenced UK bass/techno fusion ('Gadget', which echoes the ethos of his early 100 Hz releases with James Chapman), intergalactic tech-house ('Dark as Night'), and frankly filthy low-end wobblers ('Swiss').

Juaan - "Talt" (5:51)
Ramez - "Devil Selectro" (5:39)
Plazeg - "German Physicist" (6:03)
Review: Poggio and Gabriel Belabbas' cheeky Positive Future label is back once again to bring some playful mischief to the contemporary electro-techno scene. This split release showcases some of the artists orbiting the label, kicking off in spooky style with Aline Umber's 'Hypnotized', which features a pitched down vocal from Poggio no less. Juaan's 'Talt' is equally steeped in B-movie freakery and tongue-in-cheek samples, while Ramez takes things deeper on bass-toting dirtbag joint 'Devil Selectro'. Plazeg finishes the record off with the scattershot bleep feast 'German Physicist', which has a whale of a time plying its own line in gleefully macabre club music.

Funk For Peace
Review: Ibiza-based Londoner Kellie Allen is making increasingly vital moves of late. She has played all over some of Europe's finest parties and dropped, or is about to drop, music on labels such as PIV Records and Boogeyman. This one on House Puff in France is a perfect indication of her sound - classically informed house music with fresh perspective. 'Back In The 80's' is a New Jersey vibe, 'I Know' has a spaced out synth feel and 'Parisian Summer' is more kinetic and future-facing with slick grooves making you move. Closer 'Funk For Peace' is another nice and breezy house cut perfect for balmy nights.

I Love You
Cat: SF 020. Rel: 17 Oct 23
I Love You (5:41)
I Hate You (6:09)
Review: German progressive house duo Andhim specialize in bringing out the genre's sentimental side, and their latest single 'I Love You' is a masterful case in point. Describing their sound as "super house", the pair evidently only choose the most serene and gut-punching sounds and samples going in, and 'I Love You' exemplifies this, with its knife-edge, repetitive vocal and swellingly pink chords, which recall the French house climaxes of The Paradise or Daft Punk, and/or the more recent, well-rounded post-10s uplifts of Bicep. Of course, the B-side must provide the mirror image, on which the equally powerful emotion of hatred is explored. Hatred isn't exactly a house music go-to, but the psychologist in us feels compelled to remind the reader that love and hatred, aren't binary opposites, and are closer together than we often think!

I Figured Out A Way To Be Outside (9:24)
Einatmen (7:59)
Piscot (7:16)
Review: UK label After Hours looks across Europe to the talents of Romanian minimal man Vlad Arapasu. He serves up classic, turn of the millennium final where it is all abstract sounds, farting bass and weird modulations. 'I Figured Out A Way To Be Outside' is a prime example of that with its pinging kicks and soupy pads, whirring spacecraft sounds and bulbous synth droplets. 'Einatmen' is more busy but just as heady with warming sub bass holding together a scattered mix of dry hits and distant chimes, subtle melodies and delicate kicks. 'Piscot' rounds out with another loosely held together fusion of vocals, sine waves and crunchy drum work.

Track 4 (7:49)
Review: Ardeleanu Bogdan first appeared on Atipic back in 2019, and now the up and coming producer returns with another four exercises in dub techno informed minimal which should go down a storm in long-form DJ sets where there's time to stretch out and get a little psychedelic. The opening track on the record creates a vibrant soundscape teeming with movement from interwoven arps and space age pads, while the A2 locks into an elegant strain of electro capped off with hi-tech jazz flourishes. The B-side kicks off with driving machine soul doused in mellow, melodically-rich synth shapes, then the closing track completes the picture in a mellifluous blur of squidgy leads and undulating low end.

Fsk24 & Nils - "Toomai Des Elephants" (7:01)
Fsk24 & Solal Reyes - "Tongue Twister" (6:22)
Review: The twisted and trance-infused progressive techno sound of Les Disques De La Jungle is one we have been keen to hear more from, and here we have it: a new EP featuring some of the artists who have already dropped heat here. AV1 goes first with the crispy metal drums and warped synths of 'Meta2' then Fsk24 & Felix Dulac combine for the hammering tech-funk of 'Un Eclair Dans La Nuit' which would have been a Tyrant classic back in the day. Fsk24 then hooks up with Nils for the stomping and noen-lit jungle-tech of 'Toomai Des Elephants' before partnering with Solal Reyes for the tripped out but driving closer 'Tongue Twister'.

Review: Around 2008 The Black Dog landed on Soma with Radio Scarecrow. At this point the shape-shifting project was well-established as a separate entity from the early Warp years, as original member Ken Downie was joined by Martin and Richard Dust to extol a faintly gothic strain of electro-techno romanticism. 'Ripheadv9' is a fine case in point - a three-dimensional sound world shrouded in grey cloud but shot through with flashes of technicolour light. There's industrial pallor, synthetic melancholy and a heavy payload of atmosphere in abundance on this finely sculpted modern masterpiece, which has been revived with even greater detail thanks to this remastered CD edition on their own Dust Science label.

Just A Doop (5:45)
Contrast Stitch (7:09)
Review: Here comes Boink pulling up to Curb Side with some of that signature deep house niceness we so appreciate round these parts. There's a healthy amount of swing driving 'Nor Wee', not to mention an abundance of twinkling melodic touches that help the beats go down easily. 'Have More Fun' is all about a naughty bassline and subtle threads of atmosphere, while 'Just A Doop' lets the chords lead the way (but not at the expense of some cheeky low end action, naturally). 'Contrast Stitch' is a more pumped up workout with a garage house beat you can sink your dancing teeth right into, and a perfect blend of bouncy sampling and silky chords for the full dancefloor package.

Review: The CCCP Edits label keeps on rolling out the jams and now we get a second offering of them in just a couple of months. The in-house team tackles a wide remit of sounds and adds their own spin - here we start with the kaleidoscopic colours of 'Sahar-Pesok' with its icy electro rhythms and serene sense of synth craft. 'Engineer Pohoj' is a darker bit of cyborg funk to jack the floor and 'Football' then flips the script with some big disco samples over broken beat rhythms that bring fun and originality in equal measure. 'V Shapke Profilja' closes out with some wonky bass and lush neon synth work for 5 am cruising.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Outer corner slightly damaged in transit, product otherwise in working condition***

Christian AB is making low key waves with a self-steered angle on hardware house and techno which packs plenty of personality into the time-honoured tradition of box jamming. Four years since the last exemplary 12" on London In Transmission, AB is back with another grip of charismatic club cuts. 'Mind Wipe' is the logical choice for the A side, riding a warm and fluid monosynth bass hook, classic boxy 707 drums and eerie pads to inject a little spooky mystery into the dancefloor. 'Our Mission' is a more adventurous track which dusts up the drums good a proper and lays the psychedelic textures on heavy, but not at the expense of the beat of course. 'Praying For Better Days' is a rousing finale, using some anthemic organ chords as the lead hook for an uptempo jacker par excellence.

Review: Danish DJ/producer C.K. of the Aarhus-based Regelbau collective returns to his PRS imprint with four cuts on the No One Cares EP - and it's a fairly diverse offering. Starting on the first side with the trippy Berlin-style retro house vibe of 'Decisiveness', followed by some late 90s intelligent drum 'n' bass on '0 Room For 1' (Make Some Space). Over on the flip, the emotive dub tech house of 'Divider' was the real stand-out track, followed by one more mesmerising and minimal affair in the form of the deep cut 'Connector'.

There's three quality tracks on the Recurring Figures EP; the majestic and fantastical production of "Periodic Arrangement" will have you in awe by way of its mesmerising soundscape underpinned by elaborate polythyrhms. Over on the flip, go deep into the Transylvanian woods on the brooding twilight deep of "Regular Intervals" and finally something strictly for the afterhours dancefloor on the arcane trance induction of "Again & Again".

Review: Super janky and watery minimal from Chile's Ruta 5 label, helmed and regularly released-on by local mainstay Dandy Jack. Of course, Ricardo occupies a remix spot: who else? 'The Gay From Ipanema' is the minimal originals lover's choice, channelling a straight, Herbertized palette of found metallic sound. 'Labamola' nods more to bleep, while the remix credited to one mysterious 'R Villalobos' fearlessly ups the tempo to electro velocity, working in no end of sci-fi whooshes and burbles.

Review: Producer/DJs Dorisburg and Efraim Kent have pretty much always dealt in textural, knocky takes on the intersection between minimal and bass music, and this sensibility more than shines through on their latest split EP, 'Further'. The A-side would work just as well in a Plastic People revival rave as it would a minimal neeks' free-for-all, working in endlessly-shifty laser wibbles, risers and a yobby vocal shout. B-sider 'Attjo' is no less fidgety, but errs on the minimal tech side, but also comes with a subtle 'tribal' umbrage, with ghostly spirits seemingly conjured in firelit reverb and drum hits.

Review: Fresh from delivering a fantastic, club-focused album on Ninih (the robust 'Dwang'), Remco Hazewinkel AKA Eversines returns to Kalahari Oyster Cult for the first time in three years. He hits the ground running with opener 'Gaze', a moody and acid-saturated slab of nostalgic house-tempo techno full of foreboding motifs and psychedelic electronics, before wrapping winding TB-303 lines and dreamy pads around a rubbery bassline and elastic house beats on 'Fast Fall'. Over on the B-side, 'Affection Toward The Urban Environment' joins the dots between early 90s Dutch techno, Yorkshire bleep & bass and acid-flecked new beat, while 'Wavedash' is a bleep-sporting acid-electro shuffler that may well be the EP's standout moment.

Review: Florence is another white label series that marries '80s pop vocals with heady minimal house grooves. With previous titles such as 'Born Trippy' and more blatantly 'Rihanna', 'Chaka' or 'Bonobo' - you can kinda see where this lot are coming from. For their tenth edition though, they've put a twist on a modern microhouse classic (guess which one) on "Easy". Whoever churned out this one certainly had some audacity, but respect to them! Over on the flip, we have some boompty swing-fuelled deepness on 'Resist' followed by a dope hip-hop joint in the form of 'Game' which provides a welcome change in tempo.

Review: A permanent fixture of Dixon' and Ame' sets, Tel Aviv-born producer Tal Fussman marks the third episode of our 'Quantum Spits' series, which focuses on a Detroit-ish minimalism. 'Children of 95' resembles the turning of past and future, cleverly woven into a package of raw sounding club tracks inspired by influential releases from Detroit legends like Robert Hood, his outstanding family project Floorplan or the sub-aquatic basslines productions by Derrick May. Fussman incorporates elements of soul and funk, infusing warmth and emotion into an unpolished sound-universe, creating a unique sonic texture based on minimalism and space. With a sense of exploration in sound design, Fussman takes classic elements and transforms them into his own vision of house music, unique to its creator.

Review: Roger Gerressen is one of those artists, along with the likes of Plastikman and Maurizo, say, who can craft a loop so perfect that it's almost enough to just let it play for days. Here he works with Jonah on a new one for Muted Noise that finds him layer up more fulsome arrangements, at least to start with on the pained 'The Come Down' with its nagging vocal coos and melancholic chords. A Halo Varga remix is more driving and club ready tech, then 'Be Who You Want' is a delightfully deep, delicate and dubbed-out house cut with silky vocals and pillowy chords. Ion Ludwig Think You're Free remix again ups the pace and makes the original a more deriving tech cut.

You can hear Niles Rodgers' production touch all over the source material on this one, as the Giralda team get busy in the lab creating the smouldering, perfectly formed 'Spacer (Edit)'. Sepp joins in on the fun for the Tent 4 re-edit, which brings some tougher ingredients to the blend if you need to jack the party up a touch. On the B-side there's also an edit of 'Hey Dub Guy!', a more pumped up affair which will appeal to anyone who prefers a boxy 90s palette shot through with some Euro disco sass.

I Need A Beat (6:02)
Hot Pursuit (5:15)
Carburetor (5:53)
Dusk Drive (5:31)
Hidden Cove (4:36)
Review: The American Midwest is of course the homeland of the house and techno scene that has since gone global, and now its two main cities of Chicago and Detroit are represented on this Midwest Rhythms Vol.1 from Windy City mainstay Mark Grusane partners up with 313 area man Eric Schwab. As such we're presented with five irresistible cuts that tick all the right boxes - dusty analogue production, fresh grooves and great synths and vocal samples that are sure to blow up any party but never resort to tired old tropes. There are slower and more mysterious cuts like 'Hot Pursuit' and tripped-out late-night jams like 'Dusk Drive' and plenty in between.

Escape On The Midnight Express
Cat: EOG 002. Rel: 22 Nov 23
Escape On The Midnight Express (Hardway Bros mix) (8:03)
Escape On The Midnight Express (Masonic Noodles mix) (9:28)
Review: Echoes of Glory serves up a second helping with the assistance of Hardway Brothers and Masonic Noodles aka Sean Johnston and label founder Grant Dell. 'Escape On The Midnight Express' gets two tidy tech house versions with distinct flavours which should appeal to those who like their 4/4 grooves tripped-out and headsy. The Hardway Bros version is a pneumatic, boxy workout swathed in dub and rolling slow and steady for the warm-up crowd, while Dell's Masonic Noodles interpretation takes a sparser approach sprinkled with mystical synth motifs to send a chill through the dance.

Marco Hessler - "Spacewaves" (Vapnik Reshape)
Gradient - "Flight Above The Fog"
Merv - "Serpent"
Collogne - "West District"
Review: Natural Expressions takes another dive into the rich pools of dub-informed techno and tech house with this must-check four-track split release. Vapnik works spatial magic over Marco Hessler's 'Spacewaves' with some monumental chord treatments that keep suspense high and the mood psychedelic, before Gradient slips into something more comfortable on the smooth cruising immersion heater 'Flight Above The Fog'. Merv's 'Serpent' opens up the B-side in a quintessential workout of submerged, bass-loaded dub techno, and Collogne completes the picture with a swirling masterpiece fit for a Deepchord album.

HOSTOM 007
HOSTOM 007 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HOSTOM 007. Rel: 23 Nov 23
Track 1 (6:58)
Track 2 (7:16)
Track 3 (7:20)
Track 4 (7:43)
Review: Hostom is both an artistic moniker and a record label, controlled by producer and mastering engineer Varhat Veliere, acting under the aegis of their very own distribution company, based in France. Veliere has kept the Hostom arm of their craft since 2015, dropping myriad creative works centring on weirdo atmospheric house. This latest, seventh edition to the imprint hears just four new untitled ones hit the worthy shelves and all of them are unusually serene, off-guard-catching forays into unseen psychedelic worlds, whether evoked simply by the weird, wondrous and bubbly sounds heard throughout; or literally narrated by pop-psychedelic guru Terence McKenna (Track 3).

Sunset Over Saturn
Sunset Over Saturn (translucent magenta vinyl 12")
Cat: OFFWORLD 007. Rel: 01 Sep 22
Full Moon (10:17)
Shade (long mix) (9:32)
Sunset Over Saturn (4:47)
Review: Half Ukrainian, half Australian artist Tim Jackiw has been doing his thing since the late 90s, plying a strain of deep, melodic tech house which transcends the ebb and flow of trends, sounding as fresh now as it did when he launched Offworld back in 1997. While the label was only a cult concern back then, in the last couple of years Jackiw has been slipping out a steady stream of releases, with the latest being this utterly classy light beam of synth-rich club gear for dreamy dancefloors. 'Full Moon' is a redolent with misty pads and monosynth warmth, while 'Shade (Long Mix)' strikes a note somewhere in the region of B12 et al. Cooling down after the beat-driven business, 'Sunset Over Saturn' completes the set in a blissful haze of ambient techno soul.
