Review: 2020's inaugural Love Record Stores campaign is an exciting prospect for those who love coloured, marbled and "split" vinyl releases. The latest essential album to get this treatment is Black Pumas' self-titled 2019 debut. Helmed by multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada, the Austin-based band's trademark sound tends towards the psychedelic end of soul, offering up songs that variously doff a cap to Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Rotary Connection, Terry Callier and the Chambers Brothers - all topped off with impassioned, effortlessly soulful lead vocals from mic man Eric Burton. Given the inspirations, it's no surprise that the band's tracks sound authentically old, though there's also an inherent vibrancy and freshness that means they never stray into hollow pastiche.

This is his second this week - well, it's a black wax version of the same EP where the other is bright pink, both on Soundweight. Review: Backatcha is on a superb run of releases right now with top tunes from Leonie and Learoy Green dropping around the same time as this stepping street soul gem from En to End. This is primo boogie from the late 80s now landing on 45rpm for the very first time. It's been taken from the tape archives of London singer-producer Tony Shand and kicks off with the vocal version of 'Nothing's Happening'. His rather deadpan vocal has an aloof kind of allure next to the squelchy bass and glowing keys. The instrumental strips it away to allow the retro production to shine.

Review: "A jazzy throwback to Bobby Caldwell's biggest hit - I've loved so many versions of this song and now, thrilled to release my own version," says Emm Gryner of her final 2023 release. Taking on a classic is always difficult, and especially when it comes to something like 'What You Won't Do For Love', a smooth, sexy r&b workout from 1978 which remains one of legendary American singer-songwriter Caldwell's best known. Gryner plays it pretty close to the original, and her voice is more than up to the heartfelt lyrics, showcasing an impressive range as the tune steps out into its emotional conclusion. Flip it to find 'Valencia', which featured on the woman in question's recent LP, Business Pleasure, and nods to soft rock greats like Doobie Brothers and Fleetwood Mac.

Review: When it comes to acid jazz, there is no one more rightfully landed than the Incognito band. Their work in the 80s and 90s very much defined the sound as they fused jazz, funk, soul and dance into an all new form that had people all over getting up to get down. Their latest album, Into You, is as good as any of those earlier works that led to several top ten hits and is dead once again by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick who has been with them since their formation in 1979. Across 16 tracks the group showcase their lush sounds and great musicianship with a perfect blend of the old and the new.

Review: Oliver James came up in a family of musicians and has been performing most of his life. His has soul sounds deep in his heart and always manages to translate them when he performs. Here he makes his debut on Colemine Records and it nods to all his influences from gospel, blues, and R&B from the Stax era. He has previously worked as a songwriter for Rick Hall, but steps out now to start his solo career and does so with style. 'One And Only' is a perfectly blue eyed and heart aching soul sound, with rousing horns and impassioned vocals over a driving rhythm section. We can't wait for more.

Review: Active since 1976, it's a shocker that longtime Southern soul singer Jewel Bass should only be releasing her debut album now. Taking her namesake from the affectionate nickname lent to her over the years for her "jewel"-like voice, Bass' trajectory as an artist is inspiring, and a classic fill-in story: Jewel started singing in church, but began her career in secular music when a friend approached her to ask if she would replace a singer in his band who was ill. Thus a solo/touring singing career was born. Her subsequent releases, though popular in their day, were somewhat buried by the sands of time; that is, until southern soul supremo Garry Cape issued all 12 of her Malaco-recorded Jewels on a long-since deleted CD on Soulscape. Now, thanks to Soul4Real, these tracks are available on this vinyl LP.

Review: Lovers' rock down the yapper. First released on the Brixton-based reggae and dub distributor Studio 16 circa 1980 - as part of a series of releases by the Love & Unity alias, an in-house project of producer Winston Edwards - 'Can't Let You Go' is a joyous number to jab into the dial. With singer Sandra Cross on vocals, we're assured "I am yours and you are mine", doulbing up nicely with the resampled voicemail that appears at the start - "I just had to call you to tell you that I'll never let you go." it's an expansively melodic sound, and well deserving of its new reissue by the label, who are still going on strong.

Review: Late last year came the first volume of this superb new series from Mr Bongo and it's one that showed compiler Miche to be first class. He is known on the London underground as the music programmer for the acclaimed Spiritland venues and so has spent inordinate hours digging deep into all manner of different sound worlds. This one focuses on soul with 15 great tunes spanning deep and sentimental sounds, more dancey numbers of raw and guttural funk cuts. It's one of those vital double albums that does plenty of the hard work of digging for gold for you.

Review: Calvin "Popcorn" Ward is one of those legendary musical figures form time gone by. He put out just one album and a couple of Eps, but they were good enough to secure him an enduring elegy with funk and soul fans. His Prime Choice album came on Shanell in 1983 and the one copy currently for sale on second-hand sites is over 630 quid. Thankfully Mad About has assembled this heavyweight reissue. Sentimental soul, analogue disco and lo-fi funk all characterise each tune, as does Calvin's own vocals which range from upbeat and positive to heartbroken and raw. A real gem.
